Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race Photos 51

YetAnotherName writes "Tom Jones again has coverage and plenty of eye candy of the Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race, where engineering prowess converges with a sense of humor. Check out what bizarre contraptions for 2005 won awards for Best Engineering, Best Art, Best Bribes, etc., and if anyone actually finished the race."

For anyone at work on this fine Saturday, be advised that the link in the summary labeled "coverage and plenty of eye candy" is not safe for my work, and likely many others.

I found out the hard way - it would be better to put a disclaimer in the summary.

It's the top half of a damn mannequin.

You've seen worse at department stores.
      • IIRC, in some countries (or states?), it is illegal to allow children to see naked shop dummies.

Anyway, in the image the mannequin is seen from quite a long way away anyway.
        • Off-topic but I'd like a list of these countries so I can avoid them like the plague. Every time I go the mall, I see something like 10 fully naked dummies, no one cares: it's just a plastic dummy!
          • by Anonymous Coward
You seem to be indicating is a fierce desire to see naked plastic dummies. Although you say "no one cares," you'd assiduously avoid countries that hide them and you can recount how many you've seen in a mall visit. Interesting. Sure, we'll work on that list for you, but in the meantime, tell us about your childhood. Do you visit the mall daily? Have you ever ever missed an important meeting because you were at the Mall "ignoring" the dummies?

There is a picture of what appears to be a papier mache turtle or tortoise about halfway down the page. This construes a clear violation of company policy, as we believe that all creatures were created by god, and any effigy of a creature (ie. created by man & science) is an abomination against christ.

This site is only not safe for work if you happen to work for some kind of totalitarian mothers against everything company.
      • Uhm, topless chick on Cake on a Lake.
      • as we believe that all creatures were created by god, and any effigy of a creature (ie. created by man & science) is an abomination against christ. I realize that you were trying to be funny, but in some parts of Kansas large, pink, fuzzy poodles are considered the work of satan. Then again, so are a lot of other things... but the poodle thing I can understand.
    • I looked straight at that picture and still didn't notice the nudity, and I'm using a 21" monitor! Just *how* close was your boss sitting to you to catch you looking at those pictures?

I'm thinking you have a counterclaim.

      • You need to change your screen resolution to 320x240 ;) I bet you're one of those crazy xterm fanboys who use a resolution of 1600x1200 (or even worse if you have a 16/9 LCD screen)
    • Well, if your boss needs a reason to fire you why not do so because you keep [slashdot.org] surfing [slashdot.org] slashdot during your work on saturday?
    • Duh?

      Where do you work???

      The Vatican? GOP Headquarters?

Jezus M*****F****** Christ, the era of Queen Victoria is over, if you (or your boss) haven't noticed yet.

Just as an aside, I happen to work at the Vatican and we surf pr0n sites all the time--no problemo.

    • I found out the hard way

"The hard way"? Were you fired for looking at a photo of a giant homemade duck? Or are you just suffering from a severe case of melodramatitis?

  • The whole thing was hilarious. Specially the "It cain't" titanic parody, and my favorite, La Kafkaracha. For those not spanish-savvy, 'la cucaracha' means "the cockroach" in spanish. It's also a famous traditional song in Mexico. (Ironically, the song is about a cockroach not being able to walk because it's missing a leg).

La kafkaracha's face was very funny, too!

Not to mention the entire Kafka metamorphosis reference....

I've certainly heard other explanations [straightdope.com] as to why the cockroach can't travel.

    A more serious note:
While entering the water at Canton, the Westward Ho train lost control on the wet ramp and over several seconds skidded into the rocks, and apparently also into a young boy, who started screaming, "I'm gonna die!" While the Coast Guard called for an ambulance, the boy's father was eventually located, and a physician on the scene conducted a brief examination after which the boy was well enough to walk away. I became familiar with the race from Arcata to Ferndale, California when I went to school there.

    http://kineticsculpturerace.org/ [kineticsculpturerace.org]

I'm not certain how long Baltimore's been doing it, but the Arcata race has been going for 37 years.

    • the baltimore race is the east coast qualifier for that california race...
    • by Anonymous Coward
I grew up in Arcata in the '70s and '80s. The Kinetic Sculpture Race was conceived by and started by Hobart Brown, an artist from the area. The Arcata to Ferndale race was the first of the Kinetic Sculpture Races. I haven't looked through their website in a while, but I believe there is a section that describes the origins of this really cool event.
    • Damn you beat me to it. I just flipped through the pictures and was thinking "Ours is so much better". I guess I need to just stay here all day and hit refresh so I don't miss out on quality posts like this.

The original, which is still running and has the wackiest entries, is at Arcata, California, Humboldt County.

watched it from the canton waterfront park....its a shame that it rained all day (and I was looking forward to seeing the train enter the water)

for those that plan on visiting baltimore, i highly suggest checking out the American Visionary Musuem (http://www.avam.org/ [avam.org] which sponsored this race...its a musuem full of art by non-trained artists. has some really great stuff.
    • I have to second this -- AVAM is one of the best art museums I've ever been to, and it's dedicated completely to "outsider art." It should pretty much be at the top of your list if you're in the Baltimore area (it's right on the waterfront). The current exhibit is called "Holy H2O" and from what I have heard it is very cool.

The best part was at the end of the article:

    A more serious note:

I can just imagine the train verrrrrry slowly sliding on its side down the ramp into the water, while some boy is standing in front of the sliding train for several seconds watching as it slides towards him, not moving an inch, and then suddenly screaming "I'm gonna die!!!" when it barely touches him, and then the coast guard whips into action, beaching their 40 foot cutter in the 2 inch deep water next to the ramp to save the boy, calling for ambulances to race in and make sure that the boy's scraped knee is not life-threating.
    • The better part is "the boy's father was eventually located".

As they say on FARK - Parental responsibility surrenders. Why was the father not with his kid? There's obviously large objects moving around, it's the water's edge, it's not a safe place to let your kid go wandering alone.
  • ... Red Bull Flugtag [redbullflugtagusa.com], just without the flying.
  • the highlight of the page is the story way down at the bottom... apparently one of the sculptures ran into a kid who fell over and started to yell "i'm going to die"... the paramedics came, the kid was fine.
  • http://www.drewmeyer.net/gallery/kinetic2003 [drewmeyer.net] Here's some pictures from '03 of the Ferndale to Arcata California race. The best part is the local strip club owner dressed up as the evil bandit of the race. Apparently that's become a ritual.
  • There was a similar one in Boulder, CO [kbco.com] today, too. As of posting, the pictures aren't up yet, but there are pictures of past-years events [kbco.com]. I found out about it too late -- hopefully I'll be there next year.
  • Greetings from the World Championship Kinetic Sculpture Race: This year, our 37th the course is 42 miles of road, sand, mud, water (nearly 5 miles in the water), thrills, spills, chills and probably some rain as we are located in the beautiful redwood coast of far northern California. The race begins in Arcata and ends in Ferndale... three days and two campouts later!
