The Chronoliths by Robert Charles Wilson is an excellent, character-driven SF novel where monoliths (though much larger than these in the news) from the future start appearing all over the globe, containing the inscription of "Kuin" and a date, as if military victories happened there. Worth reading, I thought. It was my introduction to this excellent writer who later on won the Hugo for Spin, which may well be his best novel.
