'Avengers: Endgame' Is Returning To Theaters With New Footage (gizmodo.com) 122

Perhaps 'Avengers: Endgame' might be able to beat Avatar's massive box office record after all. From a report: Marvel has apparently decided to just re-release the damn thing. An extended version of the damn thing, to be exact. Speaking to Comicbook.com at a press junket for 'Spider-Man: Far From Home', Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige confirmed that 'Endgame' will be getting a renewed push at the box office -- and it's gonna be really soon. To boot, to entice audiences back for another three-hour stint in a movie theater seat, the re-release will include an unknown amount of new footage not seen in the original theatrical cut: "We are doing that. I don't know if it's been announced. And I don't know how much... Yeah, we're doing it next weekend.

Screenrant has a few more details from their own interview with Feige: "Not an extended cut, but there will be a version going into theaters with a bit of a marketing push with a few new things at the end of the movie. If you stay and watch the movie, after the credits, there'll be a deleted scene, a little tribute, and a few surprises. Which will be next weekend."

This means it would be even longer, right??

I've not seen it yet, but was starting to break down and consider seeing it in a theater as there is no rental release in site... I guess my natural sloth has paid off. Or has it, with a 3.5 hour + runtime? Maybe my sloth has been met by punishment instead.

Even the original three hours has been what kept me from it to date, never having quite enough time to go a theater for that long...

Read more carefully. You have to sit through the credits then they will show you some deleted scenes. No director's cut, nothing like that. This is intensely lame.

      • Well they are just pushing to be highest box office movie ever. While these changes are lame, I bet it is enough to get a movie that has been in the theaters for a few weeks, a new life, at least just enough to keep it up a notch.
Is this just a blatant money grab... You bet! But if you are going to get such a grab, you might as well do it on you most profitable movie yet.

My biggest concern if this is successful, I can see other movies in the future doing this to make a few more bucks.

The feline has escaped the containment device. Both the #1 film (Avatar) and #3 film (Titanic) already did this trick. Endgame is just following the pack.

The only thing they've achieved with this is to make it harder to find the "correct" version to download. I'm not going to pay full price to see a post credits scene

      • Can't they just sell a Diff? No need to see the whole thing again

Boy is the Disney gonna be kicking its own ass in a year or two when they'll no longer be able to market their Avatar movies as sequels to the biggest (selling) movie ever.
And they've already invested into FOUR MORE sequels.

For the US it's July 30 for digital sales, 2 weeks later for physical, unless they push it back.

...since the entire movie was a vehicle for showing actors retirement from specific roles.

Please don't go to watch the re-released movie. If millions of people go and it makes lots of money, then every movie studio will copy this tactic and make multiple versions of the big block busters and will expect you to pay to see each one of the "no this is the real ending".

On second thought, I'm not sure that doesn't sound awesome.

    • by Anonymous Coward

      This is a good point.

Plus, I already paid to see this movie the first time; I'm not going to re-pay to re-watch it just for ~10 minutes of extra footage. That's insane.

They aren't changing the ending, just adding a few things after the credits. It's the same movie.

I agree. I love the MCU. I really, really enjoyed Endgame. I really want to watch it again.

But I'm not watching it again without owning the DVD and being able to watch it on my couch. I want beer, my favorite snacks, and to be able to pause when life happens.

Asking me to go back and watch something that will DEFINITELY be on the DVD let alone Youtube shortly after is a HUGE ask.

YouTube as a cam rip yes, DVD, not necessarily.

You forget, this is Disney we're talking about, so they'll release Avengers Endgame as a DVD of the original theatrical release. Then 6 months later, they'll have a "extended theatrical release" edition with the stuff they added.

Of course, 3 months after release will have a massive box set of all the MCU movies and the Avengers Endgame in it

      • DVD? Are you from the past?

This isn't a new tactic to get a film over a financial goal, but it's still pretty rare and really only works for absolutely massive films. If studios tried this on the regular it would flop big time. Plus they are just adding in some extra context after the credits. They are not, according to the 2nd part of the summary, changing the content of the film itself.

Personally, I'd love to see them bump Cameron's overrated Dances with Smurfs (which, BTW, also did a theatrical re-run with Avatar: Special Editio

    • FWIW while I went at an 8:30am showing of Endgame on opening day, I'm not paying to sit through it again for a few Easter eggs added onto the end.
No worries, though; just wait a few days after the re-release, the extra stuff will show up on YouTube.
    • Could we get that treatment for Game of Thrones Season 8? :-)

What about those who still hasn't seen it like me?

    • This is their new way of getting people to "double dip" with a slightly different release with additional bonus material.

    The Betamax release.

  • Sorry I'm late guys, these mergers take such a long time!

What? I missed all the action?!?! Well, this five-year gap is going to piss off those Agents of Shield guys anyways.

It's just a cash grab and they didn't even take the time or effort to make another sequel.

That said I'd love to see certain popular older films such as ET or Goonies released so my kids can see them in a theater.

How about the original Red Dawn (we watch this every July 4th, that would be a fantastic date to show it in theaters)?!

I'd rather watch classic originals rather than rehashed sequels (or non-sequels like this).

    • they didn't even take the time or effort to make another sequel.

Quite the opposite. They are putting both time and effort into sequels with Phase 4 in development and an additional 8 (yet to be named) films on the roadmap.

They'll bomb, though. The MCU is dead to the masses. Tony Stark et. al. are the MCU in their minds.

        • Yep. And then we'll have year of Linux on desktop. Haters have been predicting the Denise if the MCU since phase 1. Anyway we'll see in 2 weeks. I predict a box office hit for the first phase 4 film.

      • I figure the first step is to go back in time and save Stark...

        A potential spoiler.

    • if you've got a Public University it'll be near there for the film students. Even in my tiny sh!tty little town there were a couple that regularly ran classic movies like Goonies, the original Indiana Jones flicks and the like.
      • I shall look around and pay attention for such things.

Back in 2000, I was able to see a single night showing of Run Lola Run (at an indy theater), after having watched it on VHS.

It did coincide with the Princess and the Dragon release, both are by Tom Twyker and starring Franka Potente. We had to go to another smaller theater the same night catch both.

It was a fantastic night at the movies (the best). Best crowd behavior as well; they were both subtitled German language films.

I would love to take my kids

Check out fathomevents.com for limited re-releases of older films. I personally plan on seeing Alien and Spirited Away this year.

  • And people are complaining, that Disney is only in for the money? Won't this upset fan's? Or are they just sucking this up, like every other "good iSheep", when Apple releases new boring stuff?
  • Can just imagine the bean counters tallying up the box office receipts, see they just a tad shy of Avatars revenue, and saying to each other " We need to do something about this!"
Grab some unused footage , splice it at the end, Viola!

I didn't like Titanic and thought Avatar was a gimmick film anyway.

He also re-released Avatar to push the numbers up so this is from his own playbook.

  • If this had been an actual extended version of the movie, with maybe an extra 15 to 20 minutes of additional story and action, I might have actually wanted to go see this new release. But, according to Feige, right there in the summary:

They finally found a way to add DLC to movies....

  • I'm one of the 6 people in America that still hasn't seen it yet. I don't go to the theaters, so I'm impatiently awaiting it's streaming release. Avoiding spoilers is becoming a full-time job. :(

Anyway, I hope this re-release won't slow the movie's streaming release.

    • There is nothing special about it. Just like in the rest of "superhero" action movies it's all about a bunch of idiots flying around wearing costumes, with lots of noise.

  • Today, I have been corrected: For 9 years, I was convinced the plot of "The 21-Second Excitation" episode of "The Big Bang Theory" was ludicrous. The bean counters at Marvel have proven me wrong.
  • ill wait for the blue-ray.

  • That's kind of what this is, right? Like an expansion pack or DLC for a movie... you want more content for this movie? Buy the season pass! Hrm maybe I'm giving them ideas... I'll shut up now.
  • I guess all the bugmen will be happy about this.
  • Wait until the movie industry figures out what the gaming industry has been doing for years. . . .

    Ticket prices:

    Avengers Endgame Pre-Order - $15.00 ( Free Captain America T-Shirt )
    Avengers Endgame - $10.00
Avengers Endgame Bronze Edition - $15.00
Avengers Endgame Silver Edition - $20.00
Avengers Endgame Gold Edition - $25.00
Avengers Endgame Season Pass - $40.00

Oh, and a month after it releases:

Avengers Endgame Extra Content We Intentionally Edited Out From The Previous Releases DLC

  • Maybe the deleted scenes and the added material will cancel each other out.

I hope not. If the movie gets long enough, maybe they'll include an intermission -- which it really needs. "Dances With Wolves" and/or some other over-long movies had one, IIRC.

If not, someone may need to revise the guide to when it's safest to leave to take a pee.
