Last weekend saw the death of Rene Auberjonois at age 79, writes Variety.

schwit1 quotes their report: Auberjonois was a prolific television actor, appearing as Paul Lewiston in 71 episodes of 'Boston Legal' and as Clayton Runnymede Endicott III in ABC's long-running sitcom 'Benson.' He played Odo in 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,' and carried that role into video games, voicing the same role in 'Harbinger' and 'The Fallen.' He appeared in the movie 'MASH' as Father Mulcahy in the first of several collaborations with Robert Altman. Other film credits include Roy Balgey in 1976's 'King Kong' and Reverend Oliver in 'The Patriot,' as well as parts in 'McCabe & Mrs. Miller,' 'Eyes of Laura Mars' and 'Walker.'
He also played the French chef in Disney's The Little Mermaid -- a role which Rene reenacted live at the end of this video where he discussed his friendship with William Shatner.

And this week ET shared footage of Rene thoughtfully reflecting after filming the last episode of Deep Space Nine.

  • I remember seeing him onstage in a University production at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon). Usually, you had to be an upperclassperson to appear onstage. He just blew everyone away. I expected him to become one of the great stage actors of his generation. Not achieve his fame for a fairly constrained role on the small screen. We'll miss you, Rene.
  • Odo is one of my favorite characters (besides Dax) in DS9. It just so happens that I was watching S6:E20 where Odo was playing piano and getting ready to kiss Kira hologram. RIP!!!
  • It was a sad week. We lost five other celebrities the same week, including the Charlie X actor:
    • Danny Aiello. I hadn't heard about that.

      He was also the mob boss and father figure to Leon, in The Professional.

      Paraphrasing:
      Tony/Aiello: "Check it. Make sure it's the right thing."
      Leon/Besson: "I trust you."
      Tony: "One thing's got nothing to do with the other."

        I think you meant "Leon/Reno" there, as the main character was played by actor Jean Reno, and not director Luc Besson...

    • At first I thought, wait, Lou Albano has been dead for awhile. Then I realized I was thinking of dad in Cyndi Pauper video.

    • I'd like to add some titles to your list. Many times people gloss over the less known, though just as beloved, horror/sci-fi offerings.

  • Loved him as Odo, and his brief role in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia cracked me up. "I'm shattered to pieces!"

  • I'll miss him most for his audio books that he read. He was the voice of Inspector Pendegast from authors Lincoln Child and Douglas Preston.

    No is mentioning this line of work that he has been doing for so long.

    • Errr, No One is mentioning this.

      • The same for all of his cartoon voiceovers. People wondered why he still did it after becoming famous. And he couldn't understand why you wouldn't. You could wear your own clothes, no makeup, you can do it sitting down, and the money was good.

  • As the golden age of cinema around 1960, having many young actors then, we'll see more and more of "remembering x ...". You know that nobody will remember you publicly when you die, right?
  • FYI he was also on at least one episode of Madam Secretary that I can think of.
    He always seemed to play gruff sort of characters but he always did it well. DS9 wouldn't have been the same without him. Through all that appliance and makeup he had to wear as Odo he managed to project quite a bit of emotion.

    • He played small parts on many shows. I liked his distinctive voice, he was easy to identify wherever he worked. But my favorite role he was in was Benson, and I called him Clayton when I watched DS9.
