Exclusive Clip From 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' Debuts In Fortnite (theverge.com) 24

In 30 minutes an exclusive clip from the yet-to-be-released Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will premier in the videogame Fortnite.

An anonymous reader quotes the Verge: We've known about the clip premiere since last week, but Epic disclosed some more concrete details Thursday night at the Game Awards. The studio says it'll open the gates of its virtual world starting at 1:30 p.m. EST. The clip will start airing at the Risky Reels drive-in movie theater at 2 p.m. EST. Speaking with Game Awards host Geoff Keighley yesterday, Epic's worldwide creative director Donald Mustard hinted that there would be some sort of involvement from director J.J. Abrams. We don't know if that means a live pre-show, or perhaps the director himself will intro the clip before it airs.
UPDATE: CNN has a report on the event, while also noting that its start was delayed 15 minutes "because of issues with logging in and making purchases.

"Even after 2:15 pm, players still took to social media to complain the game was crashing or they couldn't even open it."

Fortnite is also offering skins of Star Wars characters Rey and Finn, according to the article, with Mustard envisioning Fortnite as a world where all intellectual property "can live together." The Verge also predicts that the clip will eventually be available elsewhere online, while Business Insider believes "countless" Fortnite players will stream the event live on YouTube and Twitch.

Meanwhile, J. J. Abrams has also asked Lucasfilm to release the original Star Wars trilogy in its original pre-Special Edition format, according to Nerdist.com, but "I've been told that, for reasons that I quite don't understand, that that's not necessarily possible."

There, preempted the "Why is this on Slashdot?" guys.

    • I think Star Wars gives it enough of a pass as is without having to drag games into it at all. However a bunch of people dislike Disney or even Star Wars itself now so this will just devolve into a completely different argument.
    • I'll take pointless online arguments for $200, Alex.

Star Wars has long been fair game on "News for Nerds". I remember going to the Atlanta Linux Showcase back in 1999, and going to see Phantom Menace with some folks from the conference. Throw in Fortnite being a video game, and the clip being released online through a video games, and I don't see how it's NOT fitting for /.

Now, I don't play fortnite very often, because, well, I'm old (hell, I went to Linux Expo 1995 too, and I was in college at the time), and my kids show me up and make me feel bad about my

Why is this here? This is the MOST 2019 story ever. Given that it is December, I am glad this confluence of:
1- Thing exclusive for no reason
      2- Fortnite
      3- Star Wars
4- Login servers being down for no acceptable reason

All manages to fit in one slashdot story. The only thing that could make this any more slashdot is the whole NAKED AND PETRIFIED bit.

Don't worry about it, JJ. Anyone who would be interested in it can easily Google for the 4K77 project and see it the way they remember it being. If they don't want the money, that's their problem.
  • How many Ep 9 promotional pieces will run on /. in the next week? Place your bets now!

And are we going to hear about how it "has critics in raptures" . . . because that's not going to fool half as many people this time.

Hopefully a lot! It's one of the nerdiest nerd events that's happened in a very long time. It's a 50 year old sci fi movie series that's many people's favorites. It's kinda of a bit deal. Too bad you can't enjoy it.
    • How many Ep 9 promotional pieces will run on /. in the next week?

      Quite a lot.

The thing is, this is a huge Star Wars week with a ton of Star Wars stuff aligning together. Star Wars has proven to be solidly interesting to geeks in the abstract, a force way beyond whatever tampering may happen in individual elements they release.

I mean, you have the Mandalorian almost ending the first season, a new Star Wars game that is pretty good, the final episode for the set of trilogies that does mark the end of a large

    • We could have a poll:

Q: will Episode 9 be any good?
      1) Yes
      2) No
      3) No, but I'll watch it anyway.
    • How many Ep 9 promotional pieces will run on /. in the next week?

That's like asking how many french fries CowboyNeal can eat.
