The next big Hollywood movie release, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's James Bond flick "No Time to Die," is being delayed again, Bloomberg reported Friday, citing a person with knowledge of the situation, a result of the woeful economics that studios are facing because of the pandemic. From a report: "No Time to Die" will be released in 2021, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the decision isn't yet public. It had already been delayed from April to Nov. 20, after the pandemic forced movie theaters across the world to close.

Hollywood has a growing inventory of big movies sitting on the shelf because of Covid-19. The only major film that's been released since the pandemic started, Warner Bros.'s "Tenet," has attracted a small domestic audience -- partly because theaters in New York and Los Angeles are closed. Cinemas also have to cap ticket sales to adhere to social-distancing requirements. The Bond film, which cost about $250 million to make, will now compete with other big movies for audience attention in 2021. The change also means theaters will have no major movies for adults to show until the end of the year, when Warner Bros. is scheduled to release sci-fi thriller "Dune" and DC Comics installment "Wonder Woman 1984."

          It is. It is just yet another example of how the Grammy Awards mean nothing.

          I bet if some death metal band named themselves - the Mephistopheles Orchestra - and made a popular album, they would get the Best Orchestral Performance in the classical category. Best Opera. Best Classical Vocal performance.

          Jethro Tull got best Heavy Metal band years ago; so there you go.

        Having watched it on the weekend, I think if would have been better if it had been shelved too. Think eight hours of random cutscenes from a video game pasted together into a movie, and you've got Tenet.

    • When I read the headline, I assumed that was why it was being delayed, a bit of soulless dreck best suited to overly dramatic elevator rides. I'm sure the shitstorm of rage being waged by both Eilish and Bond fans across social media was enormous. The time needed to bring in a new songwriter and creating a new opening sequence is entirely why this sudden push back of several months just took place
    • Its unfortunate that the industry keeps moving dates or going direct to streaming. Where I live borders are closed and covid is all but eliminated, and cinemas are open (contact tracing in place, artificial limits on capacity). As they do private events each time they move a date it causes a lot of problems. Also when they go direct to streaming the cinema misses out too. Why cant they do a global release at the same time on all formats and let people consume it how they want and how it is appropriate in th

    I was watching on YouTube the other day and came across some video of the fillming of the latest stunt by Tom Cruise for the Mission Impossible 7 movie.

    He was riding a motorcycle off a ramp on the side of a mountain and flying off it and opening a parachute to land.

    This was raw footage and I didn't see any safety cables.

    You look at the things he's been doing in the MI movies....amazing stunts that would likely raise the hair on the backs of real pro stuntmen, like hanging onto the outside of that plane taking off...hell, the landed and took off like 8 times with him cliniging on (with wires) to make sure they got that.

    He's kind of the modern Jackie Chan.

    The MI movies also have lots of gadgets, etc.

    The latest Bond movies?

    Well, frankly, kinda boring. Not that much story, nor twists in plot, no gadgets, etc.

    And now, it appears the latest one is also said to be burdened by being "woke", and well, Bond is less of a man than he was in the olden days.

    They need to probably just can this movie, get a new Bond AND...give the franchise to someone to bring it back to what Bond was....more macho, more gadgets, better villains....etc.

    And hell, try to find an actor in the same vein as Tom Cruise....someone that will do their own stunts, eschew as much CGI as possible or just use it as needed, but don't base the whole movie off it.

    Sure, Tom Cruise is a flake in person it seems, with all the Scientology...but he is a hell of an actor, and I gotta admire him for all the stunt work he's still doing at age of about 58yrs I think.

    • Cruise didn't do too bad a job as Jack Reacher (though physically completely wrong for the role). Maybe HE should be the new Bond. Can he do a British accent? ;)

        I'll go with you on that....I've only seen the first JR movie, but I was impressed.

        I've not read any of the books, so, I'd not know what Jack was supposed to be like, but I found the first movie really good.

        Hell, I liked TC in that Knight and Day movie with Cameron Diaz.

        It was a bit of a spoof, tongue in cheek, and I don't think it did terribly

        • Reacher is described in the books as being 6'5" and heavily muscled ("naturally", not steroids). Think along the lines of The Rock and similar guys. I'd like to see another Reacher movie, but since the other two didn't do well in theaters, I'm not going to hold my breath.

      Casino Royale kicked serious ass, and it even had a strong female in the second seat. To my mind, Craig is the second best Bond, after Connery. But after Casino Royale seems to have been a high point. Quantum of Solace was just kind of messy. Skyfall was pretty good, but Spectre just seemed to be trying too hard.

      Nothing will ever deliver us quite the impact of the original Connery films. He put his stamp on the character, and I just found Roger Moore to basically be a cartoon. Live And Let Die has to have the most idiotic death of a villain I've ever seen. Pierce Brosnan just seemed on autopilot, and I don't think Dalton ever got a fair shake, and they tried to experiment a bit, especially with his second turn, with rather mixed results. George Lazenby was, well, forgettable.

      Rumors are running around now that they might pick Tom Hardy, but I dunno, I don't personally see it.

        The character had to keep being reinvented. New actors, changing times and tastes. Everyone has their favourite era and the next iteration will doubtless be very different.

        Counterpoint: Pierce Brosnan was the second best Bond. Daniel Craig is tied for fourth. There is no third.

    • The Daniel Craig films give us all the gritty realism and hatred of the human spirit that somebody thinks we crave. Escapism is hard to find these days, even during this downer of a year.

      I've always felt Tom Cruise was one of the most vanilla white guy's in Hollywood. It's certainly cool he does at least some of his own stunts (although anyone who knows Jackie Chan knows he has a loooong way to go on that guy), I just can't think of a single role he's played where i went "Damn, Tom Cruise rocked that". He really just brings vanilla white guy to every role.

      I've never seen him do a role some one else couldn't have done better.

      In case it wasn't clear to anyone that you hadn't read the books it would be with this line. The Daniel Craig generation of bond more closely imitates Ian Fleming's original version of Bond than anything the gentleman spy of the older films ever portrayed. The franchise itself was a deviation from Fleming's Bond.

      I do wholeheartedly agree about Tom Cruise though. Despite what a shitshow some of the earlier MI plots were, the acting, action, and above all his own stunt work have always set the bar for cinema.

      They all want to do that. From stories you hear, the standard procedure is: First, the actor says they want to do their own stunts. Then the studio says no because that would drive insurance costs through the roof. If the actor has enough pull then they may be able to force the studio to let them do some of those stunts anyway. Then after the actor is done a stuntman is brought in to do the stunts correctly.

      And practical effects are also very popular, but more expensive than CG.

    Now, we could have shut down this country HARD for 6 weeks and then re-open. But we have shit leadership. Now, anyone with half a brain will not go to movie theaters or any big gatherings until there is a vaccine. And even then I will not chance it because even with a vaccine, it does not mean I could not get a little bit sick. And a little bit sick with COVID does not look good.

      A bit off topic, but I'll bite a bit.

      Well, that's not really possible in the US.

      The federal government really can NOT tell the individual states what to do. That's set up on purpose.

      I mean, example, when they wanted to raise the national age for alcohol...the Feds could NOT force the states to pass those laws, or they could not pass a federal law that enforced that.

      What they did, and in most national "law" cases, is they withheld highway tax dollars to states that didn't comply.

      This was back in the early to mid 80s'....and in Louisiana, they figured they'd lose more local tax dollars than they would federal tax dollars and refused to do it for a LONG time....until the oil crunch hit and LA found they needed those dollars.

      Same thing for covid really, the Federal government cannot tell the states to shut things down legally.

      And for that point, even the local state governments have limited powers to enforce restrictions on the free movement of people in the state living there...and those that were attempted, many were taken to court.

      The US is just designed that way...in the past, I think you could have counted MUCH more on US citizens cooperating voluntarily together on this...but we're so divided these days, it ain't gonna happen any time soon.

      If this had hit say in the 70's through even the late 80's I think you'd see a much different response than you see now.

      Something started happening about 1-2 decades ago that I never saw coming...we became much more splintered than we used to be as a nation.

      Anyway...the feds legally really can NOT just order the whole US shut down.

      The feds do not have that power constitutionally.

      And with Trump getting the SCOTUS to over turn Obamacare, most of us are fucked.

      Obamacare, IMHO was deeply flawed...and it isn't Trump overturning it...it is being challenged by a number of states suing to take this to the SCOTUS.

      Trump really has little to do with it....

      Personally, I never thought it was constitutionally, for the feds to order you to purchase a product or service from a private industry source.

      The law as written and promoted, was first listed as NOT a tax...to try to sell it to the public, but when they first got into SCOTUS...they then started saying it was a tax, to try to justify it.

      The Chief Justice, Roberts, I believe had to really twist and turn to reach the decision he did on that....

      Anyway, with the individual mandate (penalty/tax) gone, there's nothing left there in the law.

      I personally didn't like Obama care, as that it caused my health insurance to SKYROCKET, for less coverage.

      I agree we need something better, but I do not want the federal govt managing it, I don't believe that is supported by the limited enumerated powers granted to it by the constitution.

      But there's got to be a solution somewhere and it wouldn't be reached if Obamacare were still there.

      Anyway, I can't find a way to tie Obamacare and Covid to Bond movies....its a stretch to connect it to any super villain today...so, well, TGIF...

  • Movie theater attendance is not going to return to pre-covid levels, even next year, and even after a vaccine. What should Hollywood do? Just get over it, cut the losses, and release the films now in theaters, on redbox discs, AND on PPV streaming platforms. And in future, don't invest hundreds of millions into a single brainless blockbuster film that's usually a prequel, a sequel, or a reboot of some kind of old saga. Instead split the budget between say five talented film directors and develop smart intel

  • From what I've read the upcoming Dune movie only covers about 1/2 of the first novel. It's going to be a hard sell to Dune fans.
