Netflix Reveals Its Most-Watched TV Shows and Movies of All Time (nbcnews.com) 37
Netflix's co-CEO revealed a list Monday showing its top shows and movies of all-time, reports NBC News. The list revealed that the 19th-century drama Bridgerton "was its most watched TV series ever, with 82 million subscribers tuning in for at least two minutes in its first 28 days on the service..."
French series "Lupin: Part 1" and season one of "The Witcher," a fantasy series starring Henry Cavill, tied for second on the list, with 76 million accounts.
Among movies, the action film Extraction earned the No. 1 spot. The film about a captured CIA agent was watched by 99 million accounts in the first 28 days, Netflix said. Bird Box, a post-apocalyptic horror film, and the action-comedy Spenser Confidential were the second- and third-most popular films, according to the company.
All the films and series on the list were Netflix originals.
Using a different metric — which shows attracted the most hours of actual viewing time — Bridgerton still came in #1 for TV shows, followed by "Money Heist: Part 4" and "Stranger Things Season 3."
And the top three movies (based on hours of viewing) were Bird Box, Extraction, and Martin Scorsese's The Irishman.

It was a great series, in my opinion. But how does its omission make the list rigged? Just because it's great, doesn't mean that there were not at least 10 other shows with higher viewership numbers. If it were in the top 10, I guaranteed it would have been renewed for a second season. The creators, after all, were all on board, and heavily disappointed that it didn't happen.

OK, Lupin 1 was good, The Witcher was good... Netflix originals are pretty good in general.

Netflix Originals will have an (unfair?) advantage in that it's available worldwide. Everything else is so fragmented in availability that the addressable market for it is much smaller.
In an ideal world the content producers would notice this and perhaps attempt to fragment less. I'm very skeptical though

Netflix Originals also have an unfair advantage in that they're more heavily promoted/presented or recommended. Well, at least they are for me. Here are examples of what I mean. While browsing through Netflix on my Roku, I see the following:
- For their "New Releases," 65 shows/movies are Netflix Originals while 10 are not. (86.67% in Netflix's favor)
- For their "New on Netflix," 47 are Netflix Originals while 28 are not. (62.67% in Netflix's favor)
- For "Recently Added," 43 are Netflix Originals and 32 are not. (57.33% in Netflix's favor)
- It gets better with "Top Picks for Me" though where only 21 are Netflix Originals and 50 of them are not. So 29.58% (almost a third) of the shows/movies Netflix is recommending are Netflix Originals.
I have to scroll to the bottom or do more digging to get past all the Netflix Originals I'm bombarded with.

Haven't seen that one yet, but after watching his performance in Spanglish, I can believe it. He does appear to truly be an actor rather than simply a shtick funny man.

The Irishman is 3.5 hours long. They only had to have half as many people actually finish the film to beat your typical movie in viewtime.

I watched it. But honestly, it was a mediocre movie. It just came across as a giant exercise in self-indulgent nostalgia for a bunch of older movie people.
Hopefully, Martin Scorsese will not make any more of these mob movies. Or at least, not movies set in the 70's. And while I still like watching Robert De Niro, I really don't need to see him trying to be De Niro from 30 years ago. Same for Pacino, etc. It was

Lupin is a really good show if you like stylish heist shows. You might want to check it out if you haven't watched it yet. If you don't know French, you'll need the subtitles, but they're really well done and don't diminish the enjoyment.

I assume they mean the entire series for Money Heist and Stranger Things since there's no way the 3rd and 4th seasons got more viewers than the first one.

In my opinion, that is the hallmark of a show that is no good. If I only watch two minutes of a show, that means I thought it sucked. But in fairness to Netflix, from the summary, it looks like Netflix uses this is only one metric they look at. They also look at the total cumulative time watching a show, which might be more meaningful.
A show which people don't even watch at all might be bad or it might just have a lousy thumbnail and poor promotion. But I imagine that the Netflix people are not stupid. They

This is probably why NetFlix changes thumbnails so often. Either that or they keep changing the thumbnails in order to deceive viewers into thinking that there is more stuff than there actually is. In either case, it is a scummy practice.

So, some portion of those viewers of the "most watched" TV series tuned in for two minutes before saying "nope, not for me"? How is this an accurate count? To accurately count a most watched show, you need to count the viewers that actually watched the entire show or the whole series in its entirety.

The article describes the movie Extraction as about a captured CIA agent (starring Bruce Willis), but the viewing numbers may have actually from the 2020 Netflix-produced film starring Chris Hemsworth about a mercenary in India retrieving a druglord's son.
I would hope that the majority of the numbers were for the 2020 action film. I shouldn't be surprised that it stole the number one slot if Netflix (or the sloppy "journalist") is just combining the numbers for both movies or just only describing the first

The exclusives are bound to be the most popular shows on netflix, simply because users have no choice but to view it there. With the other shows and especially older content, many people will have watched them elsewhere.

Just for a perspective: stranger here to any of the names named, and to the name of the Netflix itself, too.
If I want to watch a movie, I either visit local film club, occasionally with a friend, often under open sky, or dig the film of the director, I regard, myself. Or just let youtube stream of my favorite music videos carry me on.
No need for subscribed content consumption, it's hardly any good, or so I think.

Basically, anyone that looked at it to see what it was is counted as a viewer even if they decided not to bother to watch 99% of it. That's not a metric worth knowing.
