Unlocking exclusive access has been a long-held promise of a lot of NFT-based communities. And now, Spotify is helping some of them realize that claim with token-gated playlists. TechCrunch reports: According to a series of tweets by Kingship, a metaverse band signed to Universal Music Group (UMG), the streaming company is piloting playlists that could be unlocked through NFTs in certain geographies. Under the pilot, Kingship has released a special playlist that could be accessed only by Kingship key card NFT holders. The group posted a series of steps that involves linking a crypto wallet like Metamask, Trust Wallet, Rainbow, Ledger Live, or Zerion to authenticate the NFT that unlocks the playlist. Kingship said that currently, this experience is only available to Android users in the U.S., the U.K., Germany, Australia and New Zealand. "At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience. Some of those end up paving the path for our broader user experience and others serve only as important learnings. We have no further news to share on future plans at this time," a Spotify spokesperson said.

    Geeee, can't imagine why this whole crypto idea never took off and replaced the dollar.

    It's so simple, it's just a series of steps from possibly 4 different centralized providers. It's so freeing!

      The "simplicity" you mention with /s - it actually goes beyond authentication, because if you use Metamask as example, you have to get some tokens _into_ the wallet in the first instance. Usually that requires FIAT. So, you need:

      * A FIAT onramp, typically a centralised exchange - and to get this, usually it will require:
      * A verification process, which will require giving away a LOT of your personal details, including ID documents like a passport!

      • Just to really hammer home how ridiculous cryptocurrency is, for 99.9% of the global population (those who aren't into gambling), the process of getting a cryptocurrency into a wallet are complicated, but worse, _every step of the process costs you money_

        1. Transfer from your bank to an exchange - the exchange takes a percentage
        2. Buy some cryptocurrency on the exchange - the exchange charges a fee
        3. Move that cryptocurrency to a wallet address - the exchange charges a fee, to cover the network fees

    They're only doing this because they are being bribed by people who will give them money if they work "NFTs" into their product in some way.

    This is not any task that requires decentralization or blockchain. It is being done purely because an investor wants "NFT" in the product in some way.

      I think it goes deeper than that.
      It's a direct attempt to generate false exclusiveness, an idea of haves and have-nots, a fantasy that there is something to be had.
      It exploits a vulnerability in our monkey brains, especially in young people.

    • It doesn't look like they have. I just spent 3 minutes trying to hear some of the music from this band, or at least learn what kind of music it is. Literally the only thing I can find for free is an M&Ms commercial they made. Asking people to pay money to listen to a band they've never heard before is more than a little insane. But so are crypto nuts, so we'll see.

    • No, crypto probably cannot be killed except by a nuke from orbit. It's a filthy and evil technology used only by tax dodgers, hackers, kidnappers, child porners and weapons dealers. So many criminals and deviants depend on crypto that it cannot be killed and will plague us forever, like pay toilets, the blink attribute and multi level marketing.

      In a similar way to how the drummer from Def Leppard only had one arm, Metaverse band members don't have legs.

    • As far as I can tell, they have not created any music. They have created a M&Ms commercial.

      So the idea seems to be to focus entirely on the commercial side of the music industry and completely ignore the artistic side.

      It doesn't require NFT. NFT is added to generate false exclusivity. False exclusivity generates false desire. Desire is easy to exploit. Shut up and take my money and all that stuff.

  • I find YouTube extremely useful for listening to music even if I have it on other media. Sometimes it's just convenient. Often their suggestions annoy me but sometimes they hit the note just right.

    YT has a good idea of what I like. Sometimes they suggest something I really do not want to hear ever and other times they suggest something that I like but don't want to hear right then. I know I listened to that band before and I like them, but I wanted to hear more of whoever I just listened to and searched

    This really looks like a solution increasingly desperately looking for a problem it might solve that hasn't been solved better, more efficient and with less over head. Hint: This one isn't the problem you're looking for, that one has a far better solution.

    They have really lost the plot. Most Spotify users use it because it is simple and just works. You create a playlist and when you hear something you like, outside of Spotify you go into Spotify, search for it and add it to that playlist. Then when you are on the go you play that playlist on your phone or your car's infotainment system.

    That is it. That is all most people want, it meets their needs with comparatively little effort. You don't get in your car to play music, you get into your car to go somewhere, and the music should just work.

    Nobody is asking for NFT playlists because nobody wants them. This is a classic case of a solution looking for a problem. There is no problem with the basic Spotify use case so NFT don't solve any problem. People will simply ignore the whole NFT thing and hopefully it will go away.
