Taiwan plans to stop local sales for Chinese internet television streaming services operated by the likes of iQiyi and Tencent Holdings, according to regulations released this week, but does not plan on blocking the services. From a report: Democratic Taiwan, claimed by China as its sovereign territory, has long been suspicious of Chinese attempts to sway its population, including by use of fake news spread online and efforts to influence Taiwan media. The Ministry of Economic Affairs said late Tuesday the rules barring Taiwanese companies from selling or operating as sales agents for Chinese internet streaming services will take effect Sept. 3. The service iQiyi applied in 2016 to set up a Taiwan subsidiary, but was rejected because Chinese companies cannot operate online streaming services there, the ministry said. However, Taiwan is not blocking or banning them, the National Communications Commission said. "People can still watch and pay for overseas subscriptions," commission deputy chief Wong Po-Tsung told Reuters, adding that officials would ensure subscribers' rights are not affected.

Uh, you should blame Nixon for that. The Shanghai Communiqué, which he signed with Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai in 1972, stated that "there is but one China and that Taiwan is a part of China."

Also forgot that Taiwan took the same position at the time, they claim there is only one China and they are the one. They blocked the PRC from being recognized and from joining the UN. So one of the largest countries on Earth with a billion people was not represented. In a way, they're reaping what they sowed.
No, Nixon did the right thing in recognizing and normalizing relations with the PRC. The reality is they are a sovereign nation and should be represented. Cannot ignore that just because we don't like

Perhaps a little context is needed.
Back in 1970s, Taiwan was not the vibrant multi-cultural democracy that exists today. Back in those days Taiwan was ruled by the KMT that promulgates its own cult of personality based on a Leninist framework. Elections were rigged and political dissidents were arrested, some executed. In extreme cases, the entire family were murdered.
Marshall law was not lifted in Taiwan until the late 80's, democracy took root in the 90s and continues to flourish.

I do think that while the right thing to do would be to recognize and give Taiwan representation, I don't think that's going to happen. It didn't happen even when the PRC was a fraction of today's power in relation to the rest of the world. Realpolitik is what drives the world, and the status quo is almost always the path of least resistance. We need to think more pragmatic solutions.
