Ben Browder Joining Stargate SG-1 Cast 310
Ananamous Coward writes "Ben Browder, best known as Farscape's John Crichton, will become a SG-1 regular starting from season 9 (yes, there are already rumors about a 10th season), joining the SG-1 team although is role is quite unclear. He will fill the gap left by Anderson who's unlikely to return except for small appearances.
Claudia Black, Farscape's Aeryn Sun, is also going to play in a fair number of episodes"

One of the interesting things about the show was its unique environment. And again, a key part of that was the use of puppets. This allowed for the inclusion of races and characters who all didn't look like the same body type with slight variations of facial features (not to take a swipe at other Scifi / fantasy shows).
Of course, that's not to say that SG1 needs puppets.

I dont think its just the puppets, alot of the costumes used are also "unrealistic" meaning their not CGI enhanced.
I think personally its because so many sci-fi shows / movies are trying to push the envelop so to speak with computer generated effects and visuals, so whem people see a show thats so "basic" compared to what has been coming out (starwars, star trek as example), peop

Seriously though, Christopher Judge has been doing this since the beginning. He's character is kind of getting boring. Claudia as the alien that is part of SG1 would be awesome.

I could be way offbase here, so if I'm wrong, correct me. That said...
The movie was in the planning stages when they thought season six would be the last episode of SG-1. They wrote that episode intending it to be a series finale. (Kind of appropriate... the series would have started and ended with Abydos.) As it was, they got picked up for an additional season.

Given that in one of the first couple episodes, they mentioned "MacGuyvering" the Stargate's control system and had Anderson glance at Tapping when that line was used, how long do you figure before there's the first Farscape reference in an episode?
"First couple episodes?" It was in the pilot, so my guess is "the first episode they appear in." :)

In the episode that introduces Vala (Claudia Black's character), her entrance is very similar to her entrance in the Farscape pilot episode. I'm sure it was intentional.

Ben will be a great addition. However, what if some more of the main cast members leave, such as Christopher Judge. I could see a GREAT new SG1 turn replacing Judge with Claudia Black. Whoa. Very good things could happen.
I mean, I love Christopher Judge, but he's been on the show for 8 years now. He's a major character. He's been doing a lot of voices for cartoons as well. Maybe he's going to die off or something?

Episode 8-12 has already been circulating in the TV-Torrent sites for a while. Not to spoil anything, but Claudia's character in it is a rather cliched, yet entertaining character because of it.
For some reason, the episode had odd the feeling of a Bioware RPG scenario, with all the strange choices and snarky replies flying around.

Every character in SG-1 is still quite unique. One of the things I like about it is that it's fairly internally consistent with respect to some other sci-fi shows. It makes sense that after 8 years, the guys would have rubbed off on each other quite a bit. Hell, they're all the best of friends at this point (the actors AND the characters). Naturally RDA's extremely snarky attitude and sense of humor would rub off on Shanks (and O'Neill's on Dr. Jackson).

Indeed. Somehow UK's Sky One ended up getting the second half of Season 8 before the US, despite the first half showing in the states months before. Episode twelve of both SG-1 and Atlantis are due to air on Sky One on the 4th Jan, which seems to be a week before US viewers will even see episode eleven.
I thought Claudia Black's character was too much like Aeryn, but perhaps that's just because she's a really poor actor? ;)

What I don't get is that they write Don Davis - who has said that he really enjoyed being a part of SG-1 and wanted to keep doing it as long as the fans kept the show alive - out of the show, so that they can promote RDA to the SGC's commanding officer, when they know good and well that RDA is fading fast from the show. Hell, they *froze him* at the end of Season 7, so why didn't they just keep him frozen and let Don Davis continue being the great performer he is?

Don Davis didn't need to be the ultra-charismatic leading man, there was RDA's manly rogueishness, Christopher Judge channelling a ridiculously buff black version of Brent Spiner's Data, and Michael Shank's geeky-but-sexy factor.
Anyway, I too would like to see Don Davis come back in for a more regular role - send RDA off planet for the season on some special mission and bring back Davis.

Actually, Don Davis wanted to reduce his role in Stargate SG-1 so that he could persue his interest in painting. You can verify this by reading transcripts of his statements at the Stargate SG-1 conventions.
In the end, I think the decision to "promote" RDA was both his and Davis's desire to reduce their involvement in the show.

Don Davis makes a slight return in a recent episode that aired on Sky One (To show up state side in a month) where they teased that he might take over the SGC again. The reason I think they might do this is because I think the actor who plays Daniel Jackson is about to leave the show (again) since part of the plot of this episode is that he's on a ship with Hammond to check up on the Atlantis team.
Maybe I should have signaled a geek alert as well.

Joking aside, this has to be one of the great injustices of current copyright law.
I think that it would be interesting to see to different universes put together where you have plotlines from voyager intersect with SG-1 (as an example).
It would give us a chance to explore characters in new ways. Sure, some of them might be bad, but many would be interesting nonetheless.

I mean on Farscape, he regularly pulls off Cocky, Funny, "burnt," and once, a very powerful death scene... pretty much everything his character is asked to be/do with one exception: he is nothing like convincing as someone who has anything to do with science.

It seems like most everyone on here thinks that it's the producer's fault that Richard Dean Anderson isn't on the show anymore. Get a grip, some people get tired of the same job day in and day out and want a change. After all, he's not only an actor on the show, but he's also the executive producer. I imagine that makes for a long work week.
SG1 and Farscape are both excellent shows. I bear no ill will toward Sci-Fi for canning Farscape, I imagine that the show was massively expensive to produce so alth
Isn't SG-1 getting kind of long in the tooth? (Score:3, Insightful)
Personally, I thought Farscape was a great series that got way too dark and jumbled in the last season or two. It was a show that lost its way. Maybe it was too ambitious? SG-1 is less ambitious, and though it may have stumbled a few times, it never really lost its way.
I'm a big fan of SG-1, all the more since there aren't many real SF shows left on TV. However. .
Am I the only one who thinks SG-1 is getting kind of old? And cheap? I mean. . . In the beginning they had great, elaborate costumes and sets, and lots more bit parts and extras (including great ethnic actors to represent some of the planets they visited) and great military equipment props. As season after season rolls by, the production gets pared down more and more -- it gets more austere and repetitious. Fewer characters, fewer cool props, more austere sets, more of the same stuff getting recycled. And I swear, someday they are going to step out of that stargate onto yet another alien planet covered with the same damned pine trees, and I'm going to lose it.

I was even more surprised when the series turned out to be good.
A warning though, there's a lot of changes that take place during the run, and if you don't start at the beginning, then there's a lot to catch up on, and it's easy to get lost. You almost need a hard core fan sitting next to you giving pop-up bios and updates.
That said, rent the first season or so. I haven't watched it in a couple years, due largely to factors outside the show itself, and when I had the chance to watch it again, I declined because I kept getting lost. "Wait, this character was DEAD for a season? Why's he back???"

Oh, glad to hear it's gotten better. I watched a couple Season 1 or 2 episodes and went back to watching (insert name of a random sci-fi show... it was probably better). That was the most godawful derivative tripe. I wondered "why" when SciFi first started carrying it, since most of their original stuff was so much better. It was like they decided to pick up another "Lexx" (another godawful show, for those lucky enough to have not seen it

SG1 has gone the other way - it's *too* familiar so they have a hard time doing anything new. Plus with the Prometheus and earth having Warp/Antigrav it's in real danger of becoming 'Voyager with decent actors'.

They do get "magical" stuff, but they do with it what I would think they would... here they are with an ancient artifact with instantaneous travel, and 8 years later, they're building a starship?
