Ananamous Coward writes "Ben Browder, best known as Farscape's John Crichton, will become a SG-1 regular starting from season 9 (yes, there are already rumors about a 10th season), joining the SG-1 team although is role is quite unclear. He will fill the gap left by Anderson who's unlikely to return except for small appearances. Claudia Black, Farscape's Aeryn Sun, is also going to play in a fair number of episodes"

    They leave the Farscape puppets on the shelf, they'll be okay.

      I have to admit that at first, the reason I didn't watch Farscape was just how bizzare it looked. A lot of that had to do with the puppets. But then late one night I found myself looking for something to watch and settled on watching an episode of Farscape. I was hooked. I went back through earlier episodes and really enjoyed the series.

      One of the interesting things about the show was its unique environment. And again, a key part of that was the use of puppets. This allowed for the inclusion of races and characters who all didn't look like the same body type with slight variations of facial features (not to take a swipe at other Scifi / fantasy shows).

      Of course, that's not to say that SG1 needs puppets.
      • Its the same with me, I didnt start watching farscape until a few months ago. I thought it just looked to cheezy to be good. And its the low qualtiy parts of the shows that kind of make it better. Yeah the puppets dont look perfect, and they could have made it more realistic with CGI, but the puppets really give it a sci-fi feel to it. One thing that allways bothered me was did they go with the puppets because of their budget, or because they wanted to go with a more traditional style with the series.

      The puppets were one of the best parts of the show. Maybe it's just me, but I've always found suspension of disbelief came easier with good animatronics than with CGI stuff. Maybe it's because with the puppets the actors have something more substantial than a blue-screen to interact with. Cheesy as it may be, Pilot on the set is the same Pilot we see onscreen.

    How will this affect the rumoured Stargate movie that is apparently in planning stages? I don't know about any other fans of the show, but a big budget Stargate film without Anderson in the main role somehow doesn't seem as appealing. Oh well, back to watching old McGyver episodes, I guess...

      About as much as if they brought back the same memorable guy who played Daniel Jackson in the Stargate movie.

      I could be way offbase here, so if I'm wrong, correct me. That said...

      The movie was in the planning stages when they thought season six would be the last episode of SG-1. They wrote that episode intending it to be a series finale. (Kind of appropriate... the series would have started and ended with Abydos.) As it was, they got picked up for an additional season.

      • Reading ahead- the new enemy doesn't seem to be very new- just an old enemy in a new form (replicators played by Carter). Unless, of course- the Wraith have intergalactic capability.
      • The more I think about it, the more I am going to predict that Christopher Judge and Dean Anderson are going to be replaced by Ben and Claudia. Actually, Amanda could leave as well. Michael Shanks? Eh, I think he'd stay. Ben and him probably would have a lot of verbal sparring that will be priceless.

    First they replace my favorite show of all time with a crappy series that's been on the verge of dying for years...then they take its cast. Viva la Farscape!

      I'm not sure if the show was ever on the verge of dying, but I certainly was after watching ten minutes of it. Browder and Black must feel at least a little bit humiliated. I guess maybe sci-fi misses some of the viewers they lost with Farscape. This really is a big fuck you to all the Farscape fans. And please, no inane comments about how sci-fi was doing its fiduciary duty by canceling Farscape.

    Given that in one of the first couple episodes, they mentioned "MacGuyvering" the Stargate's control system and had Anderson glance at Tapping when that line was used, how long do you figure before there's the first Farscape reference in an episode?

      "First couple episodes?" It was in the pilot, so my guess is "the first episode they appear in." :)

        I've already seen the first Claudia Black episode, and I didn't catch any Farscape references. Of course, I haven't seen a whole lot of Farscape so I may have just missed them.

      He's going from playing a USAF pilot of an experimental vessel who gains knowledge of wormholes to fight aliens, to a USAF pilot who uses wormholes to fight aliens.

      I think his entire character's a farscape reference.

      In the episode that introduces Vala (Claudia Black's character), her entrance is very similar to her entrance in the Farscape pilot episode. I'm sure it was intentional.

      Not a verbal reference, but definitly a nod to Farscape.

        Ben will be a great addition. However, what if some more of the main cast members leave, such as Christopher Judge. I could see a GREAT new SG1 turn replacing Judge with Claudia Black. Whoa. Very good things could happen.

        I mean, I love Christopher Judge, but he's been on the show for 8 years now. He's a major character. He's been doing a lot of voices for cartoons as well. Maybe he's going to die off or something?

  • It's been on that long! I didn't know that. My girlfriend was a real fan (yes /.'ers, they're out there some where). She got me hooked on the show.

    Episode 8-12 has already been circulating in the TV-Torrent sites for a while. Not to spoil anything, but Claudia's character in it is a rather cliched, yet entertaining character because of it.

    For some reason, the episode had odd the feeling of a Bioware RPG scenario, with all the strange choices and snarky replies flying around.

      That's not a snide comment, I really was - one of the reasons I like SG-1 is because unlike Star Trek (for example) it has a sense of humour :)
    • I wasn't too big of a fan of the character she played on that episode, or the writing in general. It's like they are trying to make EVERY character in SG1 act and talk like RDA.

      I did get a chuckle out of the "I'm crushing your head" gag.. other than that the episode was drek.

      • But still, in my opinion, extremely enjoyable.

        Every character in SG-1 is still quite unique. One of the things I like about it is that it's fairly internally consistent with respect to some other sci-fi shows. It makes sense that after 8 years, the guys would have rubbed off on each other quite a bit. Hell, they're all the best of friends at this point (the actors AND the characters). Naturally RDA's extremely snarky attitude and sense of humor would rub off on Shanks (and O'Neill's on Dr. Jackson).

    • Indeed. Somehow UK's Sky One ended up getting the second half of Season 8 before the US, despite the first half showing in the states months before. Episode twelve of both SG-1 and Atlantis are due to air on Sky One on the 4th Jan, which seems to be a week before US viewers will even see episode eleven.

      I thought Claudia Black's character was too much like Aeryn, but perhaps that's just because she's a really poor actor? ;)

        If she were a really poor actor they would have made her a character on Stargate Atlantis.

    They were going to have to add someone eventually. Of course, SG-1 has probably already jumped the shark, largely due to Richard Dean Anderson's unwillingness to either poop or get off the pot, so to speak.

    What I don't get is that they write Don Davis - who has said that he really enjoyed being a part of SG-1 and wanted to keep doing it as long as the fans kept the show alive - out of the show, so that they can promote RDA to the SGC's commanding officer, when they know good and well that RDA is fading fast from the show. Hell, they *froze him* at the end of Season 7, so why didn't they just keep him frozen and let Don Davis continue being the great performer he is?

      Agreed, Don Davis was a fabulous part of the show, most particularly because he served as a strong counterpoint to the tongue-in-cheek performances of Richard Dean Anderson and the altogether non-military SG-1 team. It kept the show grounded in its setting, and helped bridge the suspension of disbelief factor for me.

      Don Davis didn't need to be the ultra-charismatic leading man, there was RDA's manly rogueishness, Christopher Judge channelling a ridiculously buff black version of Brent Spiner's Data, and Michael Shank's geeky-but-sexy factor.

      Anyway, I too would like to see Don Davis come back in for a more regular role - send RDA off planet for the season on some special mission and bring back Davis.

      Actually, Don Davis wanted to reduce his role in Stargate SG-1 so that he could persue his interest in painting. You can verify this by reading transcripts of his statements at the Stargate SG-1 conventions.

      In the end, I think the decision to "promote" RDA was both his and Davis's desire to reduce their involvement in the show.

      *SPOILER ALERT*

      Don Davis makes a slight return in a recent episode that aired on Sky One (To show up state side in a month) where they teased that he might take over the SGC again. The reason I think they might do this is because I think the actor who plays Daniel Jackson is about to leave the show (again) since part of the plot of this episode is that he's on a ship with Hammond to check up on the Atlantis team.

      Maybe I should have signaled a geek alert as well.

      • Theres a "Do you miss this chair?" reference, which DD takes literally and askes for the chair to be sent to Washington... He's clearly not planning to take on SG1 in the near future.

        However he *does* pilot the prometheus (right before it gets stolen by a bounty hunter who has more than a slight resemblence to the one that kept teasing Picard in TNG).

        • Like I said, it was teasing at the idea about this. But also there is that dialog that occurs between Daniel Jackson and Hammond where Daniel accuses Hammond of missing the action too much to which Hammond confesses he does.

          I honestly think that if he doesn't re-join the SGC he might be shifted to Atlantis to replace the weakly casted commander there (although I think that show is pretty impressive right now and I enjoy all the rest of the characters)
    • Don Davis left for health reasons. Richard Dean Anderson wanted to leave to spend more time with the family, but agreed to stay on in a less active role.

    The first episode will have Teal'c giving Browder eyeshadow tips.

    I find it confusing when people start popping up in other shows. I mean, when the holographic doctor from Voyager appears as a government lawyer in SG-1, one kind of expects him to have his emitter fail every minute.

    For movie actors or minor characters, that's not so much of a problem, but for regular cast members, it's weird.
    • I couldn't get used to all the characters from the sitcom Benson appearing in Star Trek as lead characters.

      I was certain that Gretchen Kraus was going to show up as the Borg Queen.

        Nah.. it would have been funnier for her to show up on DS9 as a changeling - to provide Odo a good nemesis. :o)
    • And people wonder why some actors are afraid to join up on a sci-fi show for fear of typecasting?

    • The real reason for all this actor sci-fi crossover business is because almost all sci-fi shows are shot in Vancouver Canada (because it's cheap as hell), so all sci-fi shows are using the same actors who happen to live in Vancouver because of it's convenience.

      Note to all photogenic geeks with decent acting abilities: want to make it on an episode of your favorite sci-fi as an extra or small role? Move to Vancouver (And work on those pecks I suppose).
      • I could be wrong, and my geography is really bad, but even I know that Sydney, Austrailia (Farscape) is a bit far from Vancouver, Canada.
        Like, a few thousand miles (many thousand kilometers).
        All of the specials in Farscape talk about filming in Austrailia, and most of the smaller parts were played by Austrailians.

      Joking aside, this has to be one of the great injustices of current copyright law.

      I think that it would be interesting to see to different universes put together where you have plotlines from voyager intersect with SG-1 (as an example).

      It would give us a chance to explore characters in new ways. Sure, some of them might be bad, but many would be interesting nonetheless.

  • An ultra military hard-ass. A cocky SOB. Almost sanitized. More like a cross between the marines of "Aliens" and "Master Chief" of Halo.

    More mission centric. Military brat. Academy graduate....give him a father who is a naval admiral. Not a seemingly soft edge. A cut to the chase character.

  • Browder has a wonderful range as an actor and he can even act in front of blue screens, Muppet's and people wearing makeup and foam rubber by the kilogram, but you gotta wonder what he's going to do on SG-1.

    I mean on Farscape, he regularly pulls off Cocky, Funny, "burnt," and once, a very powerful death scene... pretty much everything his character is asked to be/do with one exception: he is nothing like convincing as someone who has anything to do with science.

  • SG1 is not a bad series but compared to Farscape it looks simplistic, formulaic and moralistic.

    If SG1 is going into its 10th season, how hard it would have been to do the 5th season of Farscape properly instead of the tacked-on miniseries?

    I liked Farscape, I like SG1 and I've seen "Prometheus Unbound" SG1 episode with Claudia Black today.

    Give me more Black in SG1, it was the first really good episode in this season. But on the other hand, the best of SG1 are all the tongue-in-cheak, very out-of-character episodes -- "Window of Opportunity", "Wormhole X-Treme" or the one with O'Neil speaking Ancient, for the first time ;)

    None of Browder's jokes will be funny. Those Earth reference jokes he uses on Aliens just won't cut it in the Stargate universe...

  • It seems like most everyone on here thinks that it's the producer's fault that Richard Dean Anderson isn't on the show anymore. Get a grip, some people get tired of the same job day in and day out and want a change. After all, he's not only an actor on the show, but he's also the executive producer. I imagine that makes for a long work week.

    SG1 and Farscape are both excellent shows. I bear no ill will toward Sci-Fi for canning Farscape, I imagine that the show was massively expensive to produce so alth

    It'll be nice seeing a couple of familiar faces again, with fresh characters and settings. I don't seen any problem with that.

    Personally, I thought Farscape was a great series that got way too dark and jumbled in the last season or two. It was a show that lost its way. Maybe it was too ambitious? SG-1 is less ambitious, and though it may have stumbled a few times, it never really lost its way.

    I'm a big fan of SG-1, all the more since there aren't many real SF shows left on TV. However. . .

    Am I the only one who thinks SG-1 is getting kind of old? And cheap? I mean. . . In the beginning they had great, elaborate costumes and sets, and lots more bit parts and extras (including great ethnic actors to represent some of the planets they visited) and great military equipment props. As season after season rolls by, the production gets pared down more and more -- it gets more austere and repetitious. Fewer characters, fewer cool props, more austere sets, more of the same stuff getting recycled. And I swear, someday they are going to step out of that stargate onto yet another alien planet covered with the same damned pine trees, and I'm going to lose it.
