eldavojohn writes "Star Wars Uncut has taken a novel approach to remaking Star Wars IV: A New Hope. You merely sign up for a 15 second clip, film it and submit it. The trailer is now complete and I will suspect you might enjoy the high quality (and low quality) of some of the already accepted scenes. 251 scenes remain in need of claiming with 688 claimed and 291 finished. Do your part to remake one of the greatest movies by filming fifteen seconds of yourself and your friends!"

    You know, I have no doubt that the end result of this will mostly suck if viewed on it's own merits, but I have to give them credit for one of the most interesting and creative ideas in fan-fiction I've seen in a long time. Hopefully the Lucas hammer of wrath won't destroy this.

        I think passing this off to a team of really good video editors and special effects people when its completed would be a neat idea. But people already did their own special effects in the clips which doesn't help. I suppose they could try asking for the raw clips but people won't all have them.

      Having seen the trailer, I've probably seen as much of this project as I really want. But the concept is amusing enough that I'm glad they're doing it.

        I too am not really convinced anybody could sit through 1 1/2 hours (or whatever the duration of that film was) of such a disjointed mishmash. I find the idea creative, wacky and fun, but I really wonder if it'll work for anything beyond 15 or 20 minutes (if that).

        Good luck to them anyway, at least they're probably having fun doing it. That's the main thing after all.

          Although I appreciate John W's work (especially Schindlers list, Seven years in Tibet), he's not the only composer on the block. It seems somehow you've missed Hans Zimmer then. With well over 100 soundtracks under his belt, I'm surprised you managed to overlook him. Some block busters that carry his name are:

          - Rain Man
          - Gladiator
          - The Davinci Code
          - The Lion King
          - Backdraft
          - Pearl Harbor
          - Pirates of the Carribe

          • the segment on the dark knight extras where they talk to zimmer about the sound of the joker is one of the most intriguing things i've seen on a dvd extra. that alone made it worth the buy.

          • I'll have to look into Hans Zimmer's work then. Although, to be honest apart from Pirates of the Caribbean, Thunderbirds, and Hakuna Matata (two of which were not Zimmer's work), I can't remember the title tracks to any of these movies. With a lot of the John Williams stuff, you're still humming it in the shower three days after seeing the movie.

            Although I appreciate John W's work (especially Schindlers list, Seven years in Tibet), he's not the only composer on the block. It seems somehow you've missed Hans Zimmer then.

            Oddly enough, I haven't seen most of those, and can't recall any of those soundtracks (understandably), but even for those I did see. OTOH I do recall most of John William's work :) . Anecdotal, but there you have it :)

        • The OP never claimed he was a huge supporter of the fan community.

          He said Lucas is a huge supporter of "projects like this", which is true. Anything that feeds StarWarsMania is a good thing for continuing sales of DVDs and plastic crap, so it's in Lucas' best interest to support such projects.

          However, direct infringements on things which do not increase sales, such as replicas, are not in Lucas' best interest, therefore he goes after them.

          Lucas is a businessman, who has a franchise that is making him shedl

      The kid's a pussy, apparently he/parents sued everything and anyone that had anything to do with that video and he's been scarred by the horrific experience. I'd cut in the original star wars kid clip but again... sued into oblivion seems risky for a non profit joke movie.

        Actually his parents only ever brought suit against four kids at his school when he became a walking punchline and subject to a torrent of face-to-face day-to-day abuse. It's arguably a bit excessive but if I turned your hilariously asymmetric visage into an internet meme, and you became the office joke and punching bag, you'd probably sympathise.

          I call BS. You don't lash out and sue. You teach your kid to take lemons and make lemonade out of them.
          He probably could have gone on Letterman, ran for class president, and started his own highly successful blog, if his parents wouldn't have been total morons and instead had helped him the right way.

          Millions of people of all ages would give their left foot for the kind of spotlight he had on him. He took beautiful lemons and made poison out of them.

            Sheesus. The proper thing to do in response to this is go on Letterman? Haven't we seen time and time again that fame makes people go crazy, especially the younger they are when they become famous?

            How about a proper response being going about a normal life, not trying to sue people, become a Highly Successful Bloggist, or get on David Letterman?

            • Because a quick stint around the Hot Air Circuit could have made him some fast bucks. If the parents had managed the interviews and money correctly for the kid, there would probably have been enough for a personal trainer for a year or so (weight loss and confidence gain) and enough left over for a nice deposit into the kid's college fund.

              Plus, if the kid had managed to compose himself well while on-air (flailing around with a stick really doesn't tell us much about his personality), he might have leverage

  • Someone was definitely feeling their wheaties when they edited/timed the first face-paced segment. Some of the stuff is brilliant, though they should have allowed multiple submissions per segment; I saw some really, really bad stuff. As in, "hey, let's grab my point-and-shoot and spend 5 minutes on this." Somehow, the SVX seems strangely appropriate as a Millenium Falcon...ugly, cranky, and very weird. Nevermind it's absolutely hilarious when the driver shifts it into park to 'punch it'...

      I disagree. They'd then end up with 400 submissions for "I'm Luke Skywalker: I'm here to save you," and big gaps elsewhere, like that critical 15 seconds early in the movie with Leia just sneaking around.

      (They'd also probably end up with 800 takes of "That's no moon" in which there WAS a "moon." And they probably don't want to subject anyone to that.)

      It also seems very interesting to me to see a frankenmovie of 15 second stretches of wildly varying quality. That's far more interesting to me than a frankenmovie of entirely medium to high quality 15 second clips.

      Anyway, once they get the whole movie covered, then they can start accepting submissions for redoing scenes, then have a rating system for each segment. They'll then be able to make a -complete- movie of all the best scenes, emphasis on complete (the aforementioned Leia sneaking around might be pretty poor quality in the "best of" but at least it would be there).

      And, again more interesting to me, they could then have a "worst of" where all the worst clips were strung together. And maybe they could then throw in some of the actual movie, like Mark Hamill's original "I'm here to save you!"

        I think this will actually result in an interesting curve in the quality levels. The boring pointless parts will be at a glance boring and pointless. With the cool parts that would suck to see badly done all... done well. A "worst of" version sounds like it could end up kind of painful. I think multiple ratings for funny or well done, high quality... could produce a variety of movies though.

          Oh, oh, I know!! You could set up a web site with all the clips collected together, but with a user-moderation system for each clip. Then you could view the whole movie at +5 or -1 and depending upon whether you want Funny, Insightful, or Troll, etc. (some people have strange tastes).

      They did allow multiple submissions per scene, and say they plan to have some sort of rating system to see which makes the final cut, and to keep the alternates so people can watch it differently. Its in the FAQ on their site, which has more text than all of the rest of the site as far as I could see.

    Maybe we'll actually see Mark Hamill [imdb.com] in a motion picture again, after all these years! He was pretty fantastic in robot chicken, though.

    If they let people do any part they wanted.... They could with a little bit of programming have it pick a random 15second clip of what is available for the time slot. It would be a bit different each time. Or people could vote on the best rendition for each time slot to improve the thing.

    In any case it is a pretty cool project. And the first 'Open Source' over the internet fan made movie I've heard of. I've been in fan made anime dubs before but that was mostly to horrify anyone that downloaded it to the point of tears.

    • Not cool to reply to myself and all but. Going to the site it appears you can do w/e part you want, I'm not sure how they'll pick which one to use for the final product. Totally not how I read the summary or the other comments. Since it is open I bet people will remix their own or indeed make it random. Yay~

  • You know, one of the worst things that made YOUtube so great, is what makes this fan-movie.

    As much as I love Star-Wars (and I do LOVE the Star-Wars universe), I don't think I could stand to watch much more
    than it's trailer, and do you know why? YOUtube!

    Anyone of you guys who have ever browsed YOUtube videos, knows that it consists of ENDLESS drivel and "look-ma-I'm-on-TV" teenagers who can't get enough attention, and you've got to fight like insane for hours to get 1 % actually COOL footage.
