Blade Runner Actor Rutger Hauer Dies Aged 75 (bbc.com) 135

ikhider writes: Breukelen, Amsterdam born actor, Rutger Hauer, who played Roy Batty in the 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner and improvised the "tears in the rain" dialogue as his android character died, has too finally passed away last Friday after an illness. His funeral was held on Wednesday, July 24th. Hauer starred in TV since 1969 and then went on to movies like Sin City and Batman Begins, but is best known as Roy Batty, the android built with a four year lifespan who, with fellow androids, desperately wanted an extension. His costars paid tribute via social media. Perhaps we, the fans, can do so with private screenings of one of the Director's Cut of Blade Runner.

And much of of that final monologue was rewritten and improvised by Hauer himself. [esquire.com] From the article:

I've seen things, you people wouldn't believe, hmm ... Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion ... I've watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate ... All those moments, will be lost in time like tears in rain.

What makes that line even more relevant to this story is that Hauer largely rewrote that speech himself [wikipedia.org], including adding the poignant "all those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain" line.

It's one of those rare instances in film where a short dialogue switches the viewer from opposing the antagonist, to complete sympathy for him. I think that speaks volumes about Hauer's ability as an actor and a writer.
      • Well,
I never considered them as antagonists anyway, at least not as "the bad guys".
Their motives their pretty clear from the beginning and during the hunt they never committed a crime.

My fave is another one, he has captured someone with a bounty and an extra bonus for bringing him back alive: The crook has a grenade in his mouth to keep him from running. The client pisses Rutger off, he says "Fuck the bonus" and pulls the pin. Ending on a bang.
      • My favourite is actually his reaction to his co-star in Split Second, after hunting down the protagonist, the nerdy accountant cop goes straight to the armoury, putting aside weapons with the line "We need to get bigger guns. BIG FUCKING GUNS!"

Hauer obviously enjoyed that movie - it could have been absolute rubbish, but he made it into a cult classic that you just enjoy for the sake of him being in it. With guns. big guns.

I came here to see if anyone posted about Split Second. It's sooooooo fun to watch. I love it. "We're gonna need BIG BIG FUCKING GUNS!!!"

I also love the line where he goes into the bar and asks the server for coffee. She says "It's a 2 drink minimum" and he replies "Then give me TWO coffees" haahaha

The armorer ask Stone (Hauer's character) what his partner (the newly frenzy account) was on, he just answer chocolate.

Yes, this is my favorite of his movies, too. Watched it last night in memoriam. It's held up pretty well, or may even be slightly less weird now than it seemed then.

While nothing beats the "big fucking guns" line, a close second is when their boss sort of loses it late in the movie: "What the hell am I supposed to do? Put out an APB on some fu*ken guy who looks like the devil, answers to the name Lucifer? Yeah and you!"

  • RIP Mr. Hauer. Good thoughts for his family and friends.
  • The world feels like a spiritually poorer place today.

  • One of the greatest 'b' movies of all time. Hero or villain, anti or pro, you're characters always seemed intense and alive. You gave them the dimesionality often lacking in scripts. We are diminished in you're absence. Godspeed.
    • Agreed, that's a great movie, and now's a great time to watch it (again). Do get the uncut version with the "bad" ending. And I much prefer the title "Salute to the Jugger", the other is rather bland
"This is stupid. We should be drinking and fucking by now"
  • They don't just glitter
  • He was one of those actors that always caught your eye and you just enjoyed watching them play their part.

This weekend I guess I'll be pulling out:
    - Ladyhawk
    - Hobo with a shotgun
    - Blade Runner

Try to see Rutger Hauer in the 1977 film, SOLDIER OF ORANGE. You'll have to read some subtitles, but it's worth it. It's a really good film and he's excellent in it.

I've been watching Rutger Hauer for years. He's one of my favorite actors. Blade Runner, Blind Fury, The Blood of Heroes, Flesh+Blood, and Ladyhawke were a huge part of my teens.

  • My condolences to his family.

I always liked him. No idea why. And actually one of the few actors whom's name I can/could memorize.

On top of that, he wrote his epitaph.

I posted the same story yesterday morning with Roy's final words as the only text. There was and there is no need to say anything more than "Tears in the rain".

    • Time to die, indeed. RIP.

I've always thought he was particularly great in that movie. Maybe consider it as another option for Rutger Hauer movie night.

  • what *really* makes it is his delivery. His first line (“I’ve seen things”) sounds like a very gentle, yet cranky statement, followed up immediately with the C-beams line that is articulated with a sense of wonder, like he’s still impressed with it. Finally, he brings it to a close on an obviously down note. Basically, he sang a song, with great lyrics, and that takes some serious acting chops to pull off properly. I watched the YT clip and even knowing word-for-word what he was goin
  • If you like Rutger Hauer, DON'T play the game Observer. I don't know if he was phoning it in or if the directing was horrible, but his voice acting in that game was not good at all. The tone doesn't match the scenes, the rhythm is off, and the word choices are a bit strange at times. It could be because the game developers were not native English speakers and appeared to be overly ambitious beyond what they could deliver in the game they wanted to make. In any case, it's not a good representation of wha
