YouTube and Peacock are Now Streaming James Bond Films For Free (theverge.com) 65

The Verge writes: Maybe you're feeling nostalgic for a classic James Bond film following Sean Connery's death in late October. Or perhaps you're simply feeling a gap given that the next film, No Time to Die, got pushed back to April 2021 or beyond. Either way, you can now binge a sizable selection of the James Bond collection completely for free (with ads) from YouTube, Peacock (with its free subscription), and PlutoTV...

You can also find most of the films on Hulu and Amazon Prime this month, though you'd have to pay for those subscriptions, and Netflix has Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, and three Pierce Brosnan flicks including GoldenEye — newly relevant now that the famed Arecibo Observatory, which gets destroyed in the film, has also collapsed in real life.

    Pluto is already completely free and they constantly stream Bond movies.

    Basically, Bond is a huge franchise that UNLIKE Disney, did not think their old content = forever profit. So they asked reasonable prices and let companies stream instead of demanding cash per stream.

        Nailed it.

        No Time To Die is anticipated by a lot of people, but if and when people start going to the movies, there's going to be a year and a half's worth of movies released and even worse, they're all going to compete against movies released in 2021 and beyond.

      Never heard of Pluto so I went to take a look. Wow, it's full of crap. Stuff you wouldn't buy from the bargain bin. Bond must be the absolute jewel in their crown.

      Reminds me a lot of BritBox, which similarly is full of rubbish that you wouldn't pay for... Except they are trying to charge a monthly fee for it. So well done Pluto for being realistic about the value of their content I guess.

    • Yup, not available here either - that pisses me off something chronic, not that its not available but that the website waits until you have clicked to view the content before disappointing you. I'm coming from the same country whether Im on the video page or the playlist page, you can do the same checks on both, so why show me the playlist if the content isnt available? Cunts.

    • Yeah, I was going to say the same, what is the rationale here?
      Alot of "techies" work for Silicon Valley that is in bed with NSA/surveillance state, so movies about spies are on brand?

      • It's vaguely related to the Arecibo telescope that just collapsed, which also appeared as a level in the Goldeneye 007 videogame.

        It's a stretch, true. On the upside, they had to stop talking about "monoliths" for at least a few minutes to post it.

    • You must have been gone for a long time. This is far better and more relevant than the regular assault of political topics. Most of the Bond films are peppered with geeky gadgetry anyway.

  • They’re not great cinema, but they’re certainly fun; and sometimes I like to just turn my brain off and watch the car chases, hot women, and of course the gadgets. I’ve purchased them all, and ripped the discs to my streaming box.

    I don’t watch the Roger Moore ones all that much, although for some reason I enjoy “Live and Let Die” quite a bit more than it deserves.

      They certainly were. Nowadays, shows and movies tend to be more realistic (Austin Powers made a lot of fun at them).

    • I stopped when the kid from Mad Magazine became the Bond actor though. It crossed the already very low treshold of simple basic bearability. Sorry, my mind's dial doesn't go that low. (Hence also no superhero movies for me.)

    Bond films are an interesting case study in how variable the brains perception of things is, especially over a longish time period. I remember when I was a child, watching the Man with the Golden Gun, Live and Let Die, Moonraker, when they were on BBC1 on Christmas day. For me at the time, these films were a truly spectacular cinematic event, like watching Avatar for the first time. So I re-watched Man with the Golden Gun last year - and Christ it's bad. I could almost feel my brain scrambling to rewire itself, trying to reconcile what it was seeing with my memories. I think I'd rather live in ignorance with my childhood version of the old Bond films.

    • Well, you would not see it as that bad, if you had not seen those patterns by watching such movies before, if that is any consolation for you. :).

      Just like Seinfeld doesn't seem funny anymore ... because everyone has done it ... because Seinfeld did it.

      If you could delete all your memories of those patterns/memes/tropes from after those movies, I figure you would like it again. How's that for an argument for lobotomy and drugs? ;)

      Before the Moore era the Bond films were serious, if not always well made. Some things have not aged well but you can enjoy them as products of their time.

      The Moore era quickly got silly and there were a lot of bad movies, only saved by some occasionally good villains and stunts.

      I liked Dalton, and GoldenEye was great but later movies of that era were mediocre. Now in the Craig era it's very hit and miss again, Casino Royale and Skyfall were decent but the others...

    You're not allowed to see them if you're in Spain, 'cause there's a pay-to-view channel that only plays Bond movies.

  • Only a moron would download some information again, every time he consumes it.

    Only a gimp would allow the organized crime to make him do such a pointless thing.

    Then again, I never saw the point of watching a movie more than once. Maybe because I don't go make sandwiches during key scenes and text amd talk through the rest, and get all the details the first time 'round. Or maybe because there are so many other movies out there that I want to watch too, and will provide so many more new expriences.
