Ridley Scott Confirms 'Blade Runner' and 'Alien' Live-action Shows (inputmag.com) 37
While making the press rounds for his upcoming film, House of Gucci, iconic director Sir Ridley Scott revealed that both Blade Runner and Alien live-action television series are in the early stages of development. From a report: Speaking to the BBC news radio series, Today, Scott explained that his team has already written an initial pilot script for the former show, which would most likely air as a 10-episode run. Although the Alien series was first announced nearly a year ago as an FX on Hulu exclusive from showrunner Noah Hawley (Fargo and Legion), little has been heard of the project since then. Scott didn't tell much, but confirmed that the Alien series is still "being written for pilot," adding that Hawley and his crew "have to also write out the history, if it's eight hours or 10 hours, the bible of what happens in those 10 hours." A CGI anime set in the world of Agent K and Deckard in the year 2032, Blade Runner: Black Lotus, is currently airing on Adult Swim.

After trying to watch Raised by Wolves and seeing what Disney is doing to Star Wars, I'm fine with reheated left-overs as long as they go back to good sci-fi.

Just wait until they return from the holiday recess and find packages with large, leathery eggs delivered to their offices. I don't think their productivity will be affected one way or the other. But it will cut down on long winded speeches.
The Problem (Score:5, Interesting)
The problem is that Hollywood studios don't want to spend $80 million on a movie that might make $200 million. They want to spend $200 million on a movie that will make $1 billion.
To make this happen, they take already-successful franchises, either from comic books, regular books or older movies, and revamp them. They don't, however, give it to an established director as that would cost too much. They find a director who has done a couple of competent independent features, hand them a movie that has, often times, already been in production (the CGI and special effects shots for Black Widow started a year before a director was hired or a script completed) and expect them to create a product.
This generally means that the structure and theme of the movie will be dictated by the studio, and the director and film crew have little say in how the film will be assembled.

There is a very high demand for shows that include violence. And humans require novelty so we need to keep making new shows, since watching the same ones over and over again won't satisfy. Fortunately, there is also a demand for romantic comedies or documentaries or whatever-it-is that you prefer that doesn't include violence, so this shouldn't be a threat to you.
Why is there such a demand for violence? That would be because humans evolved to survive in a world where violence was a practical necessity.

Given the random nonsense and bad acting of Prometheus and Alien:Covenant, Alien 3 actually starts looking pretty good. Even though it starts off as an utter dissappointment by wiping away the ending of Aliens in a swift broad stroke (I wonder if the writers of Terminator: Dark Fate were fans of Aliens 3...), it at least made reasonable use of the xenomorph concept and the writers had the decency to kill off the protagonist in a dignifying manner. I'd love to be wrong. I'd love to be surprised. However, the Alien franchise has been coasting off nostalgia since 1986. Some of the most talented names in cinema have worked on the franchise since then. I kept making excuses for them, but in the end, I think there's only so many interesting stories that can be told from giant insects eating people in space. I think the franchise may just have nothing left to explore.
I'd watch a series about the colonial marines...make it an over-testosteroned version of Doctor Who and I'm all in. Make the Aliens a recurring enemy, like the Daleks, but one of many...that has the potential to be a franchise.
However, I am skeptical bugs eating people in space as a franchise really has legs. How many seasons can you really get out of that?...again, hope I'm wrong, but I'll wager the issue with the Aliens franchise is the material, not fully the fault of the directors that came after James Cameron.

I can see it now:

* The series starts with everybody dead and tells the story through random segments of past events.
* Ripley is black (Burke is still white).
* Turns out aliens are just misunderstood.
* The alien queen turns out to be Burke in drag.
Simple. I just saved Mr Scott about $5/hr on writers (none of whom will actually watch the original movies because they were made by Boomers).

And that is really the key. Are there good stories and good scripts to be told in these universes? One the one hand I would also agree with wanting more original shows with original ideas but that is no guarantee of anything being good nor is something being based on a previous film or concept a guarantee it will be bad (and let's be honest, most new productions for film or TV are unlikely to be wholly original. If they were not films or shows already they are very likely to be books or comics)
