Paramount+ Subscriber Count Grows To Nearly 40 Million (theverge.com) 38

Paramount Plus' subscriber count has ballooned to almost 40 million with the service gaining 6.8 million subscribers in the first quarter of 2022 alone, Paramount announced in its earnings report on Tuesday. The Verge reports: An increase in subscriber count led to more money for the company as well — its direct-to-consumer revenue, which includes Paramount Plus and its free TV streaming service, Pluto TV, increased 82 percent year over year. While revenue from subscriptions for both Pluto TV and Paramount Plus grew 95 percent year over year, advertising revenue increased 59 percent. The company says Paramount Plus subscribers watched more shows for longer periods of time as well. This, along with a higher subscriber count, was mostly driven by the service strengthening its roster of shows.

Well, now we know where they all went

  • The Halo series is mostly getting garbage reviews. They even gave away the first episode for free on Youtube after it bombed, and people still didn't watch it.

Do they have other good shows or movies? I haven't really heard of their service before Halo. Do they have other stuff going on that is worth a subscription?

    • Red versus Blue is a better Halo series.

    • I have it and get my money's worth. But I'm saying that after a 2-year pandemic when I have to look hard for something new.

Halo was weak to begin with, but it's watchable and getting better. I'm not into the source material, so for me it's just a quick fix of military scifi drama.

I originally got it because I love Star Trek and wanted to see if Discovery and Picard were any good. Mixed bag there: Discovery is terrible, Picard is so-so, but I was surprised to find that that I really like Lower Decks (once I

I think it's actually pretty good taken as a military sci-fi series. If you're hung up on it being canonical with the games, you'll be disappointed.

    • Hey, I'm watching Halo!

Halo, Picard, Star Trek Discovery, and Mayor of Kingtown.

I wouldn't call them great, but they're watchable.

Paramount+ is owned by CBS/VIacom, and thus it has access to the entire CBS/Viacom/Paramount properties and franchises, which is quite significant. Besides Halo (streaming exclusive), there's Star

    • I have it for Star Trek (all the various flavors). I don't think I've ever watched anything else on it but honestly given the price its not a huge burden. As long as all my streaming plans come in under $50 or so I'm fine with it. If they collectively inch over that threshold I'll start looking for fat to trim.

    • She likes the CBS shows. I like the lack of commercials and that she doesn't pay what Satellite used to charge.
  • I tried Paramount+ over the summer as a free trial so I could watch episodes of Moonbeam City (an underrated show IMHO) but the PS4 version of the app was so bad that the sound and video were out of sync for the first two or three minutes of each episode and the app constantly had input lag problems (sometimes button presses wouldn't even register). I tried to search for other things to watch but eventually gave up since the app was so bad, but in my limited searches I didn't see anything worth paying for.
    • Figure out how they are selling this as a bundle with something else.
    • It's apparently non-trivial to make a decent streaming platform+app. MOST of the streaming services are shit. Netflix is good, Youtube is great (technically I mean) and everything else is somewhere between total crap (like Paramount+ supposedly, I haven't tried it, or HBO Plus definitely, which I use regularly, and which is garbage on a technical level.)

I just recently became aware that being a T-Mobile subscriber gives me free Paramount + (at the ad-supported tier), so I went ahead and signed up. I haven't actually watched anything yet, though.

Previously I had been a paid subscriber for a couple months back in 2020 (or earlier? Back when it was CBS All Access, in any case). I watched all of the available Discovery and Picard episodes, then cancelled.

    • Came here to say this. I'm only "subscribed" because I got a free year with my T-Mobile service. After that's up, it's back to the high seas.

As it is, I don't even bother actually attempting to watch anything directly through their service; there's too many ads. I download the videos using yt-dlp and transfer them to my NAS and watch using Kodi.

      • That seems to me to be the basic problem with all the streaming services. They all have something about them that makes them worse than sailing the high seas, so that's what people are turning to again.
There was a period when streaming and paying someone for it was the future, but then the services proliferated, and the value proposition took a nosedive, and we're back where we started from.

I went a little bit further. I wrote a Windows front-end to yt-dlp [reddit.com], so I could download all of the Trek series.

Also, (and I'm sure someone is gonna give me shit for saying it) Halo. I know a lot of fans of the game hate it, but if someone really wants to experience the exact same stories again, they could always just play the games.

      • Props to you, sir. While I've used youtube-dl in the past, I was unaware of yt-dlp. Thanks for the heads up!

I just use The Pirate Bay for downloading series like that. Someone else will have checked the downloads for quality, and it's practically zero effort on my part.

I've been watching Halo. It's got a lot of over-used tropes and it's written like a video game. It's not terrible though.

...Produce some Star Trek worthy of the name.

      Let's not get crazy.

Strange New Worlds is the last chance I'll ever give them.

      • by AmiMoJo ( 196126 )

Prepare for disappointment. There are already complaints that a character who appeared in The Animated Series as a white guy is now being played by a black actor. If that's the sort of thing that bothers you...

Personally I'm looking forward to it. But then I even came to like Lower Decks.

      • Strange New Worlds is the last chance I'll ever give them.

Kurtzman is involved, so set your expectations to low and phasers to kill.

    • by AmiMoJo ( 196126 )

I'm glad they didn't just produce more episodes of TNG era stuff, or get bogged down in heavy canon.

The new shows are different, but have all the fundamental elements of a Trek show. Moral dilemmas, and characters that explore human issues in a society that is on the cusp of becoming post-racial and post-feminist. Never afraid to criticise the present, or to show how things ought to be.

There have been some issues. Season 3 of Discovery and season 2 of Picard were not great. Then again, there are plenty of d

    • ...Produce some Star Trek worthy of the name.

The problem with the new Star Treks have nothing to do with funding. Writers are cheap. Producers are plenty. It just takes someone with a functioning braincell to actually stop hiring morons (as opposed to this walking example of how you can suck at your job https://www.imdb.com/name/nm86... [imdb.com], or this walking example of how you can suck at your job across different IP https://www.imdb.com/name/nm01... [imdb.com]).

Actors Tweet once and get "cancelled". Yet somehow Writers can produce nothing but shit their entire caree

  • The new Star Treks, especially Picard, and to a lesser extent Discovery and Lower Decks, are excellent.

I just wish they would make more Moonbeam City! It is so good!

    • At first I thought you were trolling, but your low UID perplexed me... I've tried to watch Picard, Discovery and Lower Decks with the same disappointment. I would honestly like to read what you find entertaining in these shows. The theme and the story of Picard just didn't compute for me. The story was so much giving the impression that I must have missed something that I went back and watched all of TNG (which I loved), both series and films, only to make sure that I wasn't suffering from dementia. • You nailed it.

Must be a kind of temporary dementia called "nostalgia" but malignant in severity. Happens all too often to the point I think a profit could be made simply filming cosplay conventions and calling that a new show. Probably would be more in character...

We will see if anybody remains when they have to start paying.

  • I wonder if it counts all the free accounts comcast/xfinity gives its customers.
  • The reason they're hyping their subscriber numbers is because they're still loosing money hand over fist with their streaming services. It reminds me of a joke about Little Ceasar's Pizza:

"Have you tried our new Hot & Ready pizza?"

    "No, is it any good?"

    "It's hot and ready!"

Things equal to nothing else are equal to each other.
