Disney To Acquire Remaining Stake In Hulu For Expected $8.6 Billion (cnn.com) 31

An anonymous reader quotes a report from CNN: Disney will acquire Comcast's one-third stake in Hulu for an expected $8.61 billion, the company said Wednesday, in a deal that will put the streaming service entirely inside the Magic Kingdom when the transaction closes later this year. "The acquisition of Comcast's stake in Hulu at fair market value will further Disney's streaming objectives," the company said in a short statement. Wednesday's deal brings to an end long-running speculation about the fate of Hulu, but still requires an appraisal process that is expected to be completed in 2024 to further assess the streaming service's fair value before a final sale price tag is agreed upon.

  • Obviously building a warchest for more DRM restrictions.
    • On the other hand, it will be nice to have one less streaming service to pay for.

I will probably just end up switching my current Hulu ad-free sub to Disney+ (which I don't currently subscribe to, but have in the past to binge SW episodes).

      • Unless they're continually offering new content, you're better off pausing your subscription for a few months, every three months. Then you can binge the new shows/movies without paying for the dribbles of content they give in one month. They're just sucking you into a continual payment despite their lack of enough worthwhile content.

        • I am currently watching a few Hulu originals which I am enjoying. I am definitely at peak streaming subs though. If I want to subscribe to any more, I need to cancel one.

Bad article is bad. 8.6bil is the floor price, not the "expected" price. Both disney and comcast have hired outside consultants to price out the fair market value starting with 8.6 as the floor and then to agree on a higher price based on the consultants findings. Comcast wants something like 27bil, while Im sure Disney would prefer something closer to 8.6, so I assume it will land somewhere closer to 15-20

I was worried that Disney wouldn't be in control of enough of the media that Americans consume.

      Yeah...there are STILL a few properties/shows they haven't ruined......yet.

    • Kathleen Kennedy will be along to swap and pander, don't you worry!

That's most unfortunate since Disney has done so much to degrade television into a sickening, syrupy hot mess.

Fuck Disney. Walt's spinning in his grave over the shitpile that Disney's become.

??? Implying that Disney wasn't a shitpile before? Stealing ideas and stories and then locking them behind copyright while lobbying for perpetual mouse laws?

No sir, if Walt were alive today we'd be seeing more of this shitpile spending money on milking franchises and extending copyrights.

Walt died in 1966 and that copyright shit started when the first wave of fucking MBA graduates insinuated themselves into the company in the late 60's. MBAs fucked up Disney just like they did the auto and steel industries with the mantra of profit over capital investment and infrastructure.

No, Walt Disney may have had some serious issues surrounding well-rounded cartoonish backsides ( ;-) ), but he was a decent guy who wanted to provide wholesome en

The copyright shit started when the first works of Disney were at risk of falling in the open domain. Whether that was started by an MBA after Walt's death is irrelevant. He built his business on "stealing" the works of others (let's face it, Disney would use that word) and rehashing it as their own.

  • And if not, why not? Why do tech companies face more scrutiny than media companies?

Why do tech companies face more scrutiny than media companies?

They do?!?!? When did that start? MS got a slap on the wrist and went right back to the same path and kept on going. Ma Bell got broken up back in '82. Took a while, but now we're back to, what, 3, maybe 4 providers? What else has there been?

I'll know its time to stop watching TV/movies when Disney buys South Park, scrubs it clean, and make Kathleen Kennedy in charge of the property.
