Rockstar Officially Unveils GTA 6 Trailer (ign.com) 78

Rockstar Games has officially revealed the trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI, which is coming in 2025. You can watch it on YouTube. IGN reports: The trailer gives us a look at the game's female protagonist, a first for the series. Her name is Lucia, and that she starts off in prison -- "bad luck, I guess," she quips. The trailer confirms, too, that it's set in Vice City with a large sign - not a huge surprise for those who've been following the series, but exciting nonetheless. In addition to lots and lots of quick shots of crime, we also get glimpses of TikToks and live-streams, hinting that social media will be a big part of this game.

It all takes place as Tom Petty's "Love Is a Long Road" plays in the background, appropriate for the many car-related crimes we see. And yes, true to the Florida setting, there are alligators in locations where they shouldn't be. It ends by showing us a little more of Lucia and a male character, seemingly both lovers and partners-in-crime. "The only way we're gonna get through this is by sticking together and being a team," Lucia says at one point. Fans have been talking about GTA 6 ever since GTA 5 was released in 2013, perhaps unsurprisingly as IGN deemed that one a "masterpiece" in our review.

For anyone disappointed that the release date isn't until 2025, I've got more bad news for you. That date will shift to 2026 and maybe even 2027.

TBF, they haven't been working on it since GTA V was released in 2013...

I'm on the PC so I've probably got to wait another year after that.

    • They have to be careful, or you'll start seeing mods for GTA V that give you the same experience (offline only, of course) without paying Rockstar.

Hell, I haven't checked but I'd bet there's already a Vice City map mod for GTA V.

And for those of you who think the game is going to be good, they must have a short memory. GTA 5 was nothing but manipulative, pay to win trash and they made billions without doing a single thing about cheating and hacking for 10+ years. The online game is basically unplayable. They also had to have a random person fix the loading screen times. Red Dead Online was a joke set up to basically be a mobile game and people rejected it. There is a 0% chance this game will be good.

        • I wonder how many others will use some vacation time to just sit on their couch for a week and binge the single player campaign. I did so with GTA 5 and RDR 2. They were some of the best vacations I've ever had.
      • GTA V and RDR 2 were both excellent games that brought many hours of entertainment without ever paying anything extra. It's the only franchise where I don't care much about the online play and just enjoy the single player campaign and open world exploration. I've suffered the cheaters but have also had some crazy online experiences that are unparalleled. Actually being able to carry out a coordinated heist with strangers was quite impressive. Yes, they've been monumentally greedy and squeezed every last ce

In the GTA universe, San Andreas is basically California, and Vice City is basically Florida. There is also Liberty City, which is a stand-in for New York.

All of them include aspects from other parts of the US.

And Rockstar is based in Scotland.

  • Seems no one can create decent entertainment anymore, so I'm begging whatever gods might be listening; please let Rockstar escape the curse and turn out a great game.

    • I'm a simple gamer, I like playing the single player campaign, and when I get bored of that I'll put the cheat codes in and go on a rampage across the city, I know we mostly know nothing about the game at this stage, but I'm hoping they haven't gone to the extent of putting all the fun stuff behind a paywall, like what GTA Online became, otherwise there's always San Andreas on the PS2.
    • It's GTA with a female protagonist. Of course it will suck.
      • GTA1 had 4 male, 4 female playable characters. You're not a fan of the series, othrewise you'd know that. You are just a whiny asrsehole who's still terrified of cooties despite being (guessing by your ID) in your 40s at least.

Go back to your twitter shithole, gater.

      • Did Rockstar get bought by Disney?

      • So you hated GTA1 when it came out?

      • There's no inherent reason why a female protagonists should make something suck ( 13yo jokes and recent history notwithstanding ).

Of course, nothing can ever replace Trevor, but I'm hopeful this is a great game.

So far zero games have done this without being an absolute cringeworthy piece of crap. Borderlands 3, Wolfenstein Youngblood, Saints Row (2022) because fuck they can't even title shit right, were all horrendously written, pandering to the youth obsessed with social media.

This is Grand Theft Auto, a series that is positively drenched in social commentary. It makes perfect sense in it's first new addition since the PS3 is going to feature social media, the most prominent cultural ecosystem. I imagine Rockstar will not only integrate it well into the story but likely satire and shit all over it at the same time.

You misunderstand what I was saying, and it is best exemplified in the examples I gave. It's one thing to give social commentary, and another to appeal to tiktokers and cool kids like an aging boomer who doesn't communicate with the younger generation.

That is what I'm concerned about. Not that social commentary exists, but that it will be written by the clueless who don't know how to get it across. It's fine to point at past games and say something has always been good, my core point (again especially relat

        • Sure but I think in this case if it were any other dev than Rockstar I would be more concerned; they have a decades long track record of not really wanting to appeal to whatever hip new trend is out there because they kind of make the trends and they are successful enough that they don't have to give a shit about such things. This is a game series where famously the last entry has a quest where you torture a person and it's the most successful media property in all of history. They have zero reasons to wa

Back in the 90s and early 2000s the radio was fucking hilarious. The whole thing. I remember going to America turning on the car radio and was all "wow thi

      • Indeed. The question is are they going to do it *well*. The radio is a classic example of social commentary by people who understood it. On the other hand we know how older millennials and boomers understand the tiktok generation, specifically not at all.

I seriously hope this is better than just throwing gratuitous swearing into games to appeal to younger generations, as has happened over and over again. It's so easy to fuck up social commentary.

      • I frankly don't give a toss what gender a protagonist has, but it should be in line with the story. A female pimp acts different from a male one. Very different approach to the subject, very different behaviour, very different way of "lashing the horsies". Unfortunately, what you get in games like this is basically the same male pimp with a female texture.

That's not a proper representation of a female protagonist. That's pandering. If you want to give me a female protagonist, great. By all means, do it. But

                • Thing is I do know exactly what you mean, because you wrote the words.

Prove me wrong: when did you ever complain about the "agenda" of having a male protagonist? Ya didn't. You only consider women to be "agendas". Even though you know, this is NOT NEW to GTA.

Your smug is really one of a kind.

Sadly your gamergater outrage is not.

You read "I don't want yet another poorly characterized female protagonist", which instantly translated to "I don't want a female protagonist" in your head, then the foaming at the mouth started and the rest can be read in the posting history here.

It's like discussing shit with a religious nutcase. They only hear what they want to hear, strawman you and then fight the strawman because that's all they know. Have you ever entertained the idea that "I don't l

                      1. You've never latched onto a male protagonist and started making the same points.

                      2. You've ignored repeatedly that GTA starred life with female protagonists.

I hear your rationalisation loud and clear, but I don't believe it for a second. You are lying to yourself, and I can see that a mile off. Don't pretend me calling bullshit is the same as me not hearing you. I hear your protestations and see them for what they are

                    • The reason I didn't latch onto the male character is because they actually know how to write credible male characters. But when it comes to female characters, all we get is a carbon copy of the male character, just with boobs that need their own zip code. That's not storytelling, that's bullshit.

But don't worry, they won't have to improve that one bit or actually put some effort into it, because as soon as someone comes and points their bullshit out, someone like you will come along and defend it.

                      Be honest.

                    • Wait are you claiming you could see boobs so big they get their own zip code in the top down 6 pixel sprite in the original game even though it was the same sprite for all characters? Or did you watch the trailer that's playing inside your head rather than the one in the internet?

Or are you talking about a different, non rockstar, unspecified they which often writes shoddy or non-existent plots for men but by gum I'll be darned if they do that for a woman on my watch without a lot of complaining! I mean no

                    • I'm not talking about the original game, c'mon, we're talking contemporary games here. In the original GTA, I don't even know if there were different characters or what gender they might have had, it was a 2d pixel game.

I'm talking about the gaming industry as a whole. Hell, I talk about the whole entertainment industry at this point. They crank out harebrained, stupid plots, cram in a few non-white, non-male, non-hetero characters and bank on some people like you defending their hack storywriting because o

                    • And there was me thinking you were taking about GTA. Of course we're taking about contemporary games because then you'd get to concede that the game you're losing your shit about already did what had so "concerned" you.

And don't lie about not knowing about the characters. I told you repeatedly and provided a reference. You know. You are now feigning ignorance because the knowledge makes you're whinging look awfully foolish.

As for contemporary entertainment: you're clearly so suspicious of anything with feee

                    • Yes, for fuck's sake, I do demand better. I demand to be more than a token to be tossed about in an attempt to score brownie points with the alternative and progressive crowd. Is that really asking too much?

                    • I have no idea what you're claiming to be. Are you speaking on behalf of everyone who isn't a straight, cis white man? Because what you actually opened with is this:

First, a female protagonist. Because that's important today, this is what everyone has been waiting for way, way too long and it finally arrived, please don't take that away from us, can't live without one anymore. Who gives a toss if that alienates the old fanbase,

I should not have put the focus on the "female protagonist", it's more a symptom than the actual problem. The problem is more that games, or media in general, start to sacrifice storylines and engaging plots for pandering. This group has to be represented, that group has to be represented, we need one member each of the five man band, start digging through the

You played GTA1 which had a choice of 4 male and 4 female protagonists, hated GTA4 which had a single male protagonist, but what you latched onto as the primary (or at least first in your list) of problems with the as yet unreleased GTA6 was having a playable female protagonist.

Please understand that my main complaint is not the gender but the pointless pandering. At least this time it will be possible, after all we're not playing a WW2 shooter and having a female character crammed into the mess.

Oh lord, it's the end of the world because there's a female protagonist and despite knowing nothing of this just announced game you're so certain her character will turn out poorly. Please give us all a break from your unsubstantiated and overly dramatic whining or at least keep it to yourself until the game comes out so at least then you'll have an actual informed opinion. "We" would really appreciate it.

      • When you're talking violent crime as a lifestyle... generally you're talking men because of the size, strength and aggression differences.

Also, it seems like women would be less prone to banging hookers at the beach then bludgeoning them to death to get their money back. That's just a guess though.

        • Do you advocate removing all the other unrealistic aspects of the game, like being able to escape the police with a respray and carjacking tanks?

Seems realism gets applied selectively even though there are actually violent criminals who are female.

          • Actually... Yes, I do, I'm 'one of those'. I'd love to see the game be as realistic as possible without becoming entirely unplayable.

Mostly I would like a lot of changes to the star & evasion systems. Get rid of the infinite cops, just have going too far ruin the game to discourage going on epic killing sprees. It should be easier to evade cops with a change of vehicle and clothes, until you're so well known nothing works.

I think it would lead to a lot more fun in the long run, because you'd have to
