Pixar's Disney+ Pandemic Movies Are Hitting Theaters After All (engadget.com) 24
In 2024, the Pixar films that debuted on Disney+ during the COVID-19 pandemic years when theaters were shut down will be returning to the big screen. Those include Soul, Luca and Turning Red. Engadget reports: Soul will get a theatrical release on January 12, Turning Red will hit cinemas on February 9 and Luca will emerge on a silver screen near you on March 22. Given that these movies have been around for as long as three years, it's unlikely that they'll set the box office charts alight. But the theatrical releases mean you'll have a chance to enjoy these films as originally intended.

It's probably not a coincidence that the only movies that they're bringing into theaters are the ones that are generally not perceived as very "woke". They literally scrapped a bunch of woke sub-plots and scenes fr

They probably mistook it for a complaint about "woke-ness". I'm only claiming a financial decision, not judging content. Disney is in a slump, whatever the cause.

Well, these aren't just low effort, they're also non-exclusive. At least with the Taylor Swift theatrical release you couldn't (yet) buy/stream the video you were seeing in theaters. With these movies, you can watch all of them on Disney+, so the only reason one would go see them in theaters is because they want to see them on the big screen.

Plus, I'd argue that watching at home on my 55" 4k TV without people talking and playing on their phones already is the superior experience. The thing is, I liked Inside Out fairly well even though it was also that, and I am as you say a middle aged man watching it :-). But it had more general appeal somehow, Turning Red seems more narrowly targeted.
I agree maybe they are turning in that direction too much. Pixar just hasn't produced anything I even care to watch at all recently - not interested in Lightyear either, and that should be targeting me.

I didn't see Inside Out but Luca and Turning Red were pretty great, Lightyear I hate to say, not so much. It felt like Lightyear was supposed to be a film for adults who grew up with Toy Story but I think the concept was too far outside of Pixars wheelhouse. Their films really do need some child (or childlike) characters to anchor them and Lightyear didn't have that.
