New 'Star Wars' Movie Announced Set 5 Years After 'Rise of Skywalker' (cnn.com) 82

A new Star Wars movie — starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy — will be released in 2027, the two announced Friday at the "Star Wars Celebration" (a fan event in Japan). CNN reports: Set to begin production this fall, the movie will be set approximately five years after "Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker," released in 2019, but will sit outside the Skywalker story as a standalone film. "The film... is an entirely new adventure featuring all-new characters set in a period of time that has not been explored on screen," said a statement from Lucasfilm, the owner of the "Star Wars" franchise...

"The script is just so good, the story, it has so much adventure, so much heart and original character. It's an opportunity to shine the light into a side of the universe that we may not have seen," Gosling said. Levy, the director of "Deadpool & Wolverine," told the crowd the film would have all the "fun of 'Star Wars'" but it would be done "in ways that are new and original...."

The next movie in the franchise, "The Mandalorian & Grogu," a spin-off of "The Mandalorian" series, directed by Jon Favreau, will hit cinemas in May 2026.
USA Today notes that more new Star Wars movies have also been announced: Daisy Ridley is set to star in a film that will see her character, Rey, building a new Jedi Order after the events of "The Rise of Skywalker." [This is sometimes referred to as "Star Wars Episode X: New Jedi Order."]

"Logan" filmmaker James Mangold has also been tapped to direct a movie about the dawn of the Jedi, and [Dave] Filoni is directing one said to "close out the interconnected stories" told in the live-action Disney+ shows like "The Mandalorian."

    It was quite dry after the "episodes 1 to 3". In the "last three" even the green milk ran dry.

    What little goodwill that crap could not finish off was burned to ashes by the TV crap.

    Just let it join grandma Leia and grandpa Solo in peace.

      The side series have been great. "The Bad Batch" stands out, as does "Clone Wars." Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett are good if you're into that kind of thing. As in any universe, there are plenty of side stories to explore, only limited by your story telling skill.

      I have full expectation for this one to bad. If it's like Deadpool and Wolverine, expect it to just be a self-roast and fan-service. Still, there is an off chance that it will be good.

        I think there's some truth in this. I hate the re-litigating of original stories. Everybody has seen the original story. Everybody understood it in their own way. In the end a story of faeries and magic combined with WWII fighter combat in space. You had some wonder as a child the first time you saw it. Now people come along and tell you that everything works differently from the way you understood it. It's truly irritating because it's messing with your own interpretation and memories as if George Lucas ow

        And on the other hand you have: Ahsoka, The Acolyte, Skeleton Crew and whatever the Obi Wan one was called. To each his own, but I'd also put Boba Fett in my list rather than yours.

          Obi-Wan was okay (not good enough for rewatch, but enjoyable), mostly because, well 1) Couple of references to Andor (like Mon Mothma), and actually *good* series and 2) Ewan McGregor carried the protagonist.

          The others, hard agree.

      • The Mandalorian is mediocre. It has many inconsistencies within itself, it's "small", safe and becomes boring as episodes go by.
        The Book of Boba Fett is weak, makes little sense at times and is far removed from the SW Universe.

        No comment on the animated series, because I haven't watched them, and I don't intend to, I just don't like the genre.

        Solo was mediocre towards decent, and the only movie I did enjoy was Rogue One.

        The Book of Boba Fett was crap. Mandalorian had an okay first season, but after that went downhill fast.

        The animated shows and Andor are the stand-outs. The Acolyte and Skeleton crew were decent, if you are into those kinds of things.

    • The original movie was good for what it was, for its time. Arguably Empire was better, but then came Return of the Jedi which was when the IP milking started in earnest - that entire movie appears to have been designed from the start to sell toys and appeal to children before a single line of dialog was considered.

      After that, I'd say Rogue One was good. I don't watch them, but there are people who rave about one animated series or another. Mandalorian had some good qualities, but I think as time passes

      And yet some of the series have been well received with recent efforts like Andor being reviewed overwhelmingly positive by critics and fans alive. I suspect your view isn't as universal as you think it is.

        Where did I claim it is? I'm old, if you are my age and find the SW crap amusing, you're probably descending back to childhood and not in a good way.

        But when even the grand kids are bored and don't want any of it, the time to put it to rest has long passed.

    A new shadow, the Nuovo Order has risen. Adventuring will start in the desert, then in space it will be discovered that there is a Darth star which is very much different than a death star, except it is big, not a moon, and shoots down planets. This small scrappy team will destroy it once and for all.

    Wait until part three, where it is discovered that Emperor Palpatine is still alive. (A surprising number of Star Wars movies feature that plot).

        Best of the humor, but it's a big target.

        My own interest is in statistics on Star Wars books. I am afraid that each of those books represents yet another potential Star Wars movie.

        Very afraid.

        Okay, that was an attempted joke and I don't think I've ever read any Star Wars book and only a few of the non-canonical Star Trek books. So now I also want statistics about seminal canons? Getting into really speculative territory because I pay so little attention to TV or movies, but I think there is lots more stuff

    It's not Star Wars without those two. Star Wars is ultimately about things witnessed by the two droids. I didn't say it, George Lucas did. He said that's one of the main things he ripped off of The Hidden Fortress. Reference: https://www.bbc.com/culture/ar... [bbc.com]

    they literally destroyed the franchise, and it's been 20 years in the making, new low after new low. Star wars is dead. Kids don't care, old people don't care.

    Feel free to throw away another few hundreds million dollars Hollywood. Nobody gives a damn about star wars.

    That said, this concept at least shows promise - if they have some decent writing and direction it could be a good movie.
    If not, it will just be another of the long list of crap Star Wars movies that really should not be watched but anyone who successfully completed 3rd grade.

    OK, and how many people liked Daisy Ridley's character? Her toys sat on store shelves until they went on clearance, and they were even a tough sell after that. That's true for nearly every character in their trilogy.

    Disney still doesn't understand Star Wars if their plan is use DOA characters to revive a series that has lost half its fan-base. They may be shooting for new fans, but clearly that didn't work too well the first time around.

    I mean there isn't much character growth that can be written into a character who is already perfect and the best at everything.

    "The Rise of Skywalker—was that the one where they put Luke Skywalker on an island, drinking space yak milk? They clearly hated the material, and specifically, Kathleen Kennedy hated it. Rey is all-powerful, able to crash an entire ship with her mind, and manages to pilot the Millennium Falcon, out-flying X-wings, just because she's a woman and a girl boss."
  • Who the hell cares? Give the IP to someone else.
  • Each planet has a different length of year. So which planet's "5 years" later are we talking about?

  • They still can't come up with anything new, even after 50 years of deep contemplation. And, Star Wars wasn't that great to begin with. It was just warmed over Flash Gordon with CGI. So, really, nothing new after almost 100 years.

  • They've already emasculated each and every male character, I can't see anywhere else for this to go unless they bring in some totally new ones, and they have to be central to the story for it to have full effect, which is anathema to the Disney way. So I'll honestly be surprised if they try to squeeze this turnip one more time.
