Twitch Announces Six-Day Marathon Of Classic MST3K Episodes (betanews.com) 26

BrianFagioli quotes Beta News: Twitch was designed as a video game streaming service, but since Amazon bought it, it seems to be evolving into something more. While it is still primarily a platform for showing off gaming, people are using it for general videos, broadcasting pretty much anything. Heck, the service has even offered marathons of classic TV shows, such as Mister Rogers' Neighborhood and Power Rangers. Last week Twitch announced its latest marathon offering -- Mystery Science Theater 3000... The "MST3K" marathon will last an impressive six straight days, where 38 episodes will be shown. The experience begins on June 26th at 2pm ET.

It really seems wrong to use the internet and a livestream platform to make a linear broadcasts. I liked the Internet because it helped break the linear "timeslot" format for entertainment. And twitch doesn't seem to have a way to go to the beginning of a show either.

This allows people to watch together and chat while watching.

      • So use Netflix or other streaming services. Did Twitch actually get the rights to stream?

Justin.tv successfully rebranded itself as Twitch. They're just coming back home to where they were before.

I hope they show the episode of Happy Days where Fonzie jumps the shark!

I wonder which episodes? It would be nice to see some of the more obscure ones.

The math sort of doesn't line up,though. 38 episodes in 6 days is less than 10 hours a day. Maybe they run repeat rounds for people who are at work?

Last time I checked there were back episodes of MST3K on Netflix.

MST3K is also some of the easiest stuff to torrent or even find on YouTube. I've never not been able to pull up clips or whole episodes to show my kids what we watched back in the day.

Overall, Twitch seems a little lost with this gimmick. There IS a market for gaming liveplay. (I watch it myself at work when I get sick of podcasts and streaming music.) Why not continue to invest in it, especially as ESPN and its sports have finally jumped the shark?

What does it hurt them, though? I haven't checked if Amazon already had rights to stream that content but it's not like they have to take other channels off the air in order to show this.
    • to show my kids what we watched back in the day.

I suddenly feel old. When I think of shows from "back in the day", it's Gunsmoke or Bonanza. If you really want to have some fun, show your kids All in the Family episodes. They should be triggered every 2 minutes at a minimum.

    • I'm seen a lot of full movies with annotations on the official MST3K YouTube channel.

The annotations help when you don't quite get the jokes and the youngest viewers definitely won't. The new season fixes that.
