'Sonic the Hedgehog' Movie is Getting Delayed To Redesign the Title Character (techcrunch.com) 114

Director Jeff Fowler has announced that Paramount had delayed the release of 'Sonic the Hedgehog' by three months, to allow the visual effects team some more time to work on the central character's redesign. A report adds: To say that reaction to the first 'Sonic the Hedgehog' trailer was mixed would be overly diplomatic. But at least fans were able to look beyond the thin premise and bizarre Jim Carrey turn for long enough to focus on what was really important: the weird-ass Sonic design.

Anyone else seen Howard the Duck? That was definitely a case of weird title character design.

Howard wasn't creepy like a cgi sonic that looks nothing like every single artist rendition of the character throughout every single version of the video game to date. A more apt reference would be the horrible TMNT remake where they decided the turtles needed retarded nostrils.

The first Mortal Kombat movie was fun.

People complain about DOOM, but I don't think it was half bad, they even threw in a short nod to the way the game is played. Yes it isn't the best, but it didn't totally suck.

That's nostalgia and fandom speaking. As a movie, Doom totally sucked. But worth remembering is that while critical consensus and audience rating agree quite a lot, they are not at 0% and 0% which means that there were still people out there who were generally positively entertained. I am one of those people. I liked the movie, but it was an incredibly bad movie.

I remember when I was a teenager hearing talk of s DooM film, me and my brother vowed we'd go and see it together. That must have been in about 1995. So when it eventually came out we did go and see it together.

Yep it was a really pretty terrible movie. We both enjoyed it too.

      Mortal Kombat
      Street Fighter
      Super Mario Bros
      Resident Evil
      Silent Hill

All of these movies were all a lot of fun to watch.

Do want academy award winning video game movies? If so, then you're probably retarded.

Name a video game movie that didn't suck

Detective Pikachu. Heck, the animated Pokemon movies were mostly fine given their target audience.

Resident Evil, at least the first few. Perfectly acceptable action schlock.

And of course Mortal Kombat. This one is divisive, but a lot of people liked it - as a fan of cheesy martial arts movies, I though it was good. Awesome soundtrack.

Arguably the Doom movie. It wasn't good, but I'd say it was a solid "meh". I'd also give Warcraft a "meh": it had some good scenes here and there. I think if had been a low-budget B-movie fantasy (with correspondingly lowered expectations) I'd have liked it.

    • Silent Hill was an okay movie in my opinion. There were some elements of it that fans of the series didn't like, but if you weren't overly deep into the lore of the series it was a decent movie.

Street Fighter wasn't a good movie by any stretch, but I think that Raul Julia's performance put it into enjoyable camp territory.

I haven't seen it, but I've heard there's a Detective Pikachu movie that just came out and the reviews seem generally favorable.

The original Mortal Kombat. I never played the game, but I enjoyed the movie anyway. It had an interesting and cool atmosphere.

    • Overlord was basically a Wolfenstein: Old blood game.

Postal? Also the only decent Uwe Boll movie.

    • I enjoyed Prince Of Persia. Not exactly high art but an enjoyable enough action film.

I agree with your basic point though. Even the best aren't must-see movies.

Look, I mean the trailer had The Rock + giant Gorilla fighting a giant crocodile. Which basically summarizes the film. If you see the trailer and thing "coooool" then the film 100% delivers on what it promises. If you see that trailer and think that kind of thing sucks then the film will suck for you. Basically the film 100% delivers a good solid version of exactly what is promised which I think is an important thing for a film n

    • Movies that spun off games have currently the same problem that games made after movies had in the 80s and 90s. They're done as an afterthought, usually with little to no budget, trying to ride the coattail of the franchise they rip off. It's taken the movie industry a long time before they realized that simply handing the rights to make a game to whomever handed them the most money is hurting their franchise because, yes, people DO care and remember.

It's a learning process. Movie studios had to learn that

    A well welcomed delay.

Maybe they will take some visual pointers from the pokemon movie and keep it at least somewhat accurate.

Or maybe the dozens of people who have put together good-looking models for Sonic since the trailer. There are some that really captured the original look.

People don't want a Sonic that looks like he could actually exist, they wan't a Sonic with overlapping eyeballs.

Also, a moose bit my sister.

  • That is the internet for you - you can make Sonic change as fast as he can run!

They're planning on making Sonic yellow (with a little black on his ears and back), and having him wear a Deerstalker.

Also, they're trying to recruit Ryan Reynolds to do his voice.

  • This is why you don't change a major component of character design when you do a movie.

    • No not at all. This is about the whole package. It's about the height, it's about sonic having legs and body in ... sonic proportions rather than human proportions. It's about the eyes not being human eyes but actually looking like the video game

      • I like anime googly eyes. Makes him look like a harmless ball of fluff high on caffeine ..

        Oh, wait, that's pikachu

  • As long as the redesign still has blue arms, I'll be happy.

They should have gone full fanfiction from day 1 and have Sonic fuck Ron from Harry Potter or something.

  • I like the current sonic design, like that artist guy from game of war...fans need to loosen up a bit because no progress can be made if the characters always look like âoethe original versionâ....sonic has evolved over time in the video games and comics over the years...I think the current sonic design looks fine, so...we live in an age of massive storage on Blu-ray Discs, so donâ(TM)t waste all the work currently done, offer both versions on a collectors Blu-ray edition!!!! • At least people remember it.

I would've remembered a movie with a freakish manhog Sonic.

  • No. I can't stand that bastard.
  • When I saw the trailer I wondered if the film producers had even seen the game? Sonic in the trailer looked more like badly done sports mascot, than the character we remember in Sega games.

  • I was hoping for something that reminded me more of the character from the game. Expectations being inversely proportional to happiness. Oh well. Time to move on. Anyone for a remake of Leather Goddesses of Phobos?

Decaffeinated coffee? Just Say No.
