Ukraine President Plugs 15-Year-Old Film To Free Hostages (metro.co.uk) 34

In what sounds like a Black Mirror episode, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy complied with a hostage-takers demands and posted a six-second video urging the public to watch the 2005 film "Earthlings," a movie about mankind using animals for pets, food and clothing. "Everyone should watch the 2005 film 'Earthlings,'" he said in the video posted to his Facebook page, which has been since deleted. The hostage-taker eventually surrendered to police and the bus passengers were freed unharmed. Deutsche Welle reports: Ukrainian police say the armed man who took 13 people aboard a long-distance bus in the western city of Lutsk hostage on Tuesday morning has been detained after authorities stormed the vehicle. The country's SBU Security Service said no one was injured in the incident. A man with explosives and weapons seized the bus and took 13 people hostage in northwestern Ukraine early Tuesday morning, the SBU said in a Facebook statement. Metro reports: The man called police after taking control of the bus and introduced himself as Maksim Plokhoy, deputy interior minister Anton Gerashchenko said. But the minister added that police have identified the man as Maksim Krivosh, a 44-year-old Ukrainian born in Russia. In a Telegram account reportedly belonging to him, Krivosh apparently admitted taking people on the bus hostage, and said "the state has always been and always is the first terrorist," while demanding that senior Ukrainian officials release statements on their social media pages calling themselves terrorists. He also called for Ukrainian president President Zelensky to urge people to watch the 2005 movie Earthlings. The film chronicles the day-to-day practices of large industries, and how they rely on animals for profit.

The rule is never give up to hostage takers

    • Following a policy thoughtlessly is to not use your head and think. Saying to watch a movie that could wake up some people is a reasonable thing to do when peoples lives hang in the balance. Sure it means somebody might try something worse but then you refuse if that makes sense.

A nutcase is not the same as a political or monetary demand.

      • The only "reason" in your bullshit syllogism is populism. That's an animalisitic reason for political survival.

        Fuck populism

Harry: You are deeply nuts, you know that? "Shoot the hostage"... jeez...

It is an animal rights movie narrated by Joaquin Phoenix that holds no punches, from the one good review on Rotten Tomatoes:

Its most haunting scene is at a fur farm. A skinned animal, perhaps a fox, lies glistening with blood and white fat and muscle. The creature is still alive, lifting her skinless head and blinking at the camera.

That scene was staged by the activists, they skinned a LIVE ANIMAL for the shock value. No one who has ever actually butchered an animal would ever do that, it's asking to be bit, scratched and otherwise injured. The poor thing had to have been muzzled and tied down while they did it. That's the kind of sick fuckers they are.

Common sense and basic logic. If you have the tools to skin an animal, you have the tools to kill it.

No it's just bullshit from the anti-animal rights lobby. It happens because contrary to the troll who responded to you when you industrialise this kind of thing you don't care about "killing it", you just care about how many skins you can put together in how short a time.

The person you're responding to is also full of shit, the idea that an animal that is literally on deaths door has the energy to scratch and bite is clearly complete and utter bullshit.

Both the person you're responding to, and responded to,

the idea that an animal that is literally on deaths door has the energy to scratch and bite

You're the same AC that I responded to above, aren't you? You're amazingly ignorant of anything to do with animal husbandry. An animal which "is literally on deaths door" is going to have an extremely poor pelt, which would be valueless. Fur farms do their best to keep their animals healthy since that's the only way they can make money.

Even if that were not the case you are still wrong, the instinct of self-defense is one of the last to go. I've had a rabbit which had received half the pattern from a 16

Oh, and this bit of idiocy?

              1) People who find animal suffering so unconscionable that they dedicate their lives to stopping it made an animal suffer in the most horrific of ways

Yes, they would do that if it gave them something truly shocking and horrific for their propaganda. I've worked with PETA trust fund brats, they couldn't do something like that themselves but they wouldn't hesitate to pay someone else to "for the greater good".

This is why Slashdot moderation is broken.

You can literally just make up a complete crock of shit with absolute zero evidence, and that doesn't even make any kind of rational sense and get +5.

And it's not that I don't believe what the GP is saying, I've no doubt he read the same bullshit somewhere else and decided in his irrational mind that because he read it on the internet and found something PETA said offensive once or whatever that it must be true.

But it isn't, and the up moderation of this conspiracy

Proving that terrorism work, showing all that even 5 seconds message from the terrorist which would otherwise be unheard, will be shared world-wide by media and news sites like you and reach much farther than it would originally, thanks to your uncritical chase after sensational news.

Experiments must be reproducible; they should all fail in the same way.
