AI Can Make Music, Screenplays, and Poetry. What About a Movie? (medium.com) 35

Want a movie where a protagonist your age, race, sexuality, gender, and religion becomes an Olympic swimmer? You got it. Want a movie where someone demographically identical to your boss gets squeezed to death and devoured by a Burmese python? Your wish is its command. From a report: Want to leave out the specifics and let fate decide what never-before-imagined movie will be entertaining you this evening? Black Box has you covered. After you make your choices -- and of course pay a nominal fee for the serious computational heavy lifting necessarily involved -- your order is received at Black Box HQ, and an original movie will be on its way shortly.

Black Box converts your specifications into data -- or if you didn't ask for anything specific, a blob of randomly generated numerical noise will do -- and the creation process can begin. That first collection of ones and zeros will become a prompt, and will be fed into a type of A.I. called a transformer, which will spit out the text screenplay for your movie through a process a little like the autocomplete function on your smartphone. That screenplay will then be fed into a variation on today's vector quantized variational autoencoders -- neural nets that generate music, basically -- producing chopped up little bits of sound that, when strung together, form an audio version of the spoken dialogue and sound effects in your custom movie, plus an orchestral score. Finally, in the most challenging part of the process, those 90 minutes of audio, along with the screenplay, get fed into the world's most sophisticated GAN, or generative adversarial network. Working scene by scene, the Black Box GAN would generate a cast of live action characters -- lifelike humans, or at least human-esque avatars -- built from the ground up, along with all of the settings, monsters, car chases, dogs, cats, and little surprises that make it feel like a real movie.

  • It's inevitable that all entertainment will be personalised to live out your fantasies in ways you before could only imagine. Want to become a movie director? It's reduced to a single click of a button.

    • I don't want to write my own movies though, or have my fantasies turned into a screenplay. I want to be surprised.
With that said, this AI could hardly do worse than the demented hacks in Hollywood these days.
      • I want to be surprised.

No problem. Just increase the variational vector element for "surprising plot twists".

        • Only if you conflate being surprised with seeing something unexpected. Not the same thing. Still your story and any 'surprise twists' will be evident and so, not a surprise just an anomaly.
      • I want to be surprised.

Would you be surprised if this person [thisperson...texist.com] appeared in the movie?

        • Every once and again that thing generates some sort of eldritch horror show in the background. The one it created when I first clicked the link was a middle age woman, but in the background was part a 50-ish man, but his eye was some sort of weird grey orb.
    • When did you call it? I would like to see the proof! Or perhaps you called it in your make believe AI land?

The summary leave out a key part of the actual article: the part where they say that this is hypothetical, not real.

"Black Box" does not exist; it is a what-if scenario.

I suppose that hypothetically, anything that doesn't violate some fundamental laws of physics or mathematics is possible. And, actually, I think that, if we, as a species, survive long enough, something like this might really come to pass. But my first thought on reading the summary was that, there are some really really bad movies out there, that seemed to have been cut and pasted and generally ripped off from other movies that were themselves mostly cut and pasted rip offs, and the AI generated movie pr

You can use AI in much of the artistic process, just not the creative process. So AI virtual robotics becomes a big thing in animation, every element is a robot, designed to act in the way expected. So for example a robot tree, that acts like a tree, in the wind, it's leaves and branches moving according to the direction and velocity of the wind and the gravity being applied to the three. People would become obvious virtual robots, you tell them where to go, what to say and what emotions are to be expressed

Sorry, I'm going to dispute this fundamental premise. I haven't seen anything of the sort. The best I've seen is a mismash of other works blended together in an unholy mess, often entertaining due to the inevitably surreal nature of the derived work. But to be blunt, there was little artistic value or worth except for the novelty of "generated by a computer."

Sorry, are we talking AI or Hollywood here? But then apparently there are only seven plots and only 12 notes.

  • There's been an AI making movies for years now.
I think the model is called "Uwe Boll"

Nope, sorry, I'm not in a masturbatory mood.

Isn't that a bit inconsiderate towards people who are their own bosses?

Depends on what you are into.

  • AI Can Make bad Music, bad Screenplays, and bad Poetry. What About a bad Movie?

    FTFY.

To be fair, bad music and bad movies made by AI have a good chance at being better than a lot of stuff out there at the moment. :D

    • I'm not sure people want what might be considered good by experts. AI is likely to make something fresh, and to need human intervention to add trite and derivative content to make the movies more palatable.

Yeah, yeah. Anyone can go "why don't we make a network like GPT-3 only better and feed it as input to a video GAN with sound and... and..."

If you're that kind of person, you can also go ahead and hype-market it right away, before you actually have anything remotely like it. There are a lot of that kind of person in tech. Hard to deliver? "Let the eggheads figure it out, after all I gave them this fine idea didn't I?"

AI generated movies remotely worth watching are at least 10 years away, and that's assuming no general collapse first.

    • We can make a tool like this of similar quality to GPT-3 today. All someone needs to do is pay to collect the data. It's not hard, it's just time consuming.

The only problem is that GPT-3 is a crap product designed as a demo, not to be released.
    • Collapse or no, you're waaay too optimistic.

Here is a quote from study that disagrees with the "bad music" part (assuming humans can make good music):

“how humans respond to AI-generated music and if they can tell if its been made by computers or humans ... Users could tell no discernible deference to either"

We don't need AI to produce bad poetry as 14 year olds churn out enough of it for the whole world already.
  • We should just eliminate the middle man. The best audience for AI-generated movies and the like is other AI. That gives the rest of us a reprieve from all the dog poo that is being put out there, either by alleged humans, or by AI.

  • Every time I read about an AI making something "creative" and
"as good as a human", the result it is pure shite.
The only people praising it are the developers and their buddies.
