Sony and AMC Offer NFTs to 'Spider-Man' Advance Ticket Buyers

Movie theatre chain AMC and Sony Pictures are giving away 86,000 Spider-man NFTs to people who buy/reserve tickets for December 16th's premiere of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The special tickets go on sale tonight at midnight EST on the AMC web site and app (available only to people who've signed up for one of the chain's special perks programs like Stubs Premiere, A-List, and Investor Connect). "The movie ticket must be scanned at the theatre when the guest arrives for the movie," explains the movie industry site Boxoffice Pro. "If the ticket purchase is refunded or the ticket goes unused, or is not scanned, the NFT code will not be delivered." The Spider-Man NFT will be available to be redeemed at a dedicated site operated by WAX, an energy efficient, ultra-low carbon footprint blockchain and the first certified carbon neutral. WAX is the most utilized blockchain in the world processing 15 million transactions daily.

Adam Aron, Chairman of the Board and CEO of AMC, commented: "Our AMC Theatres guests and our AMC Entertainment shareholders have been calling for AMC to get into the world of NFTs, and we couldn't imagine a more perfect way to start doing so than with our good friends at Sony Pictures."
Over 100 NFT designs will be available (designed by Cub Studios), the announcement points out

I have a relative who is always falling for scams like those "uncirculated state quarter bankroll" ads that are all over cable TV and newspapers. They won't stop no matter how many times we tell them that a wheat penny is not a good Christmas present, and no we don't care that the ad claimed it was a good investment. Hint: if the ad claims it's going to increase in value, you can be sure that it won't.

That was actually the phrase used on German home-shopping TV to hawk that crap: "Garantierte Wertsteigerungschance" (which basically translates to a "guaranteed chance of appreciation"), and which means exactly as you determined: fuck all. As long as they are really giving them away, i.e. the ticket costs the normal price to see a movie, then I don't have a problem with this. The free promotional items you get at events are often basically worthless beyond sentimental value if you happened to really enjoy it.

It's the people taking out $200k loans to buy NFTs of Bored Apes that are getting shafted.

I can't believe Sony and AMC have the audacity to market NFTs to the people voluntarily choosing to watch comic book movies. People heading to the cinemas to see the Spiderman #0087 movie aren't just your average consumers; they are connoisseurs of fine media entertainment, and won't be tricked into lapping up whatever trash you throw in front of them!

Couldn't agree more though the MCU is popular with the kids. Marvel is over reaching these days with the new spiderman being bi/gay, I won't be taking my kids to see it. I don't care what people do in their bedrooms but reaching the point of advertising and pushing it is where I draw the line. The original spiderman wasn't bi/gay, he was crazy about MJ. Spiderman being bi/gay seems to be an unsubstantiated rumour based on a couple of the actors who played him saying they would be open to it.

The movie is all about the multiverse and different versions of Spiderman, so maybe one of them will be bi or gay, but that's pure speculation. Marvel does love to do alternative versions of characters like that, and they can be interesting. Spider-Gwen is a good example, started as an alternative universe version and has since become a popular character in her own righ

It's because of the way the rights to Spiderman were handled. Basically they were contractually obligated to keep making them, or lose the rights to the character.

Eventually the lawyers worked something out and Spidy went back to Marvel to appear in the MCU movies. And to be fair the two they have done so far have been fun movies. The second one was a bit meh but I'm definitely interested in watching this one as soon as it's streaming.
