Crunchyroll Closes Deal To Acquire Anime Superstore Right Stuf (crunchyroll.com) 24

Crunchyroll announced that it's acquired Right Stuf, one of the world's leading online anime superstores. "Expanding Crunchyroll's eCommerce offerings, the acquisition aims to serve anime fans and collectors an even wider array of merchandise for online purchase including manga, home video, figures, games, music and everything in between," writes the company in a post. From the report: Founded in 1987, Right Stuf is a leading consumer source for anime pop culture merchandise online. By visiting its eCommerce portal, enthusiasts and collectors can find thousands of products, including Blu-rays, manga books, music, figurines, collectables, and more. Right Stuf also offers licensed anime home video products through its own label.

"For 35 years, Right Stuf's mission has been to connect anime fans with the products they love," said Shawne Kleckner, CEO of Right Stuf. "Joining forces with Crunchyroll allows us to accelerate and scale this effort more than ever before. There has never been a more exciting time to be an anime fan than today!" Kleckner and the Right Stuf team will join Crunchyroll's Emerging Businesses organization, led by Terry Li.
Sony acquired Crunchyroll for $1.175 billion from AT&T, in a deal that closed in August 2021.

So, we're starting off on the path to an effective monopoly of the anime market, at least in the US. Sony is gobbling up a very large percentage of it, having already grabbed both Crunchroll and Funimation, and now this. I just don't see any way this constant consolation is in any way good for consumers.

It isn't. They're starting to censor pretty much everything in line with intersectional beliefs. It's what results in insane shit like censoring everything that looks like letter "Y" because that is also what drawn cleavage looks like and because that's something you can do on AI.

Why do you hate the free market so much?

        • by Luckyo ( 1726890 )

Free market on its own? I don't, other than managing it so it doesn't reach the natural end point of monopoly.

Market distorted by political apparatchiks as is with this case? Oof. Where I even start?

          • by narcc ( 412956 )

            LOL! You're kidding, right?

That's not the market distorted, that's just how the free market works. If a company does something the public doesn't like, then that company suffers. That's the invisible hand at work.

No, you don't support the free market. You're just upset that your actions have consequences.

            • by Luckyo ( 1726890 )

And if company backed by political apparatchiks sees "suffering", it gets propped up by capital generated elsewhere.

Is this a new concept for you?

              • by narcc ( 412956 )

Is it new? No, I've heard your unhinged ranting before. The trouble is that you think everyone lives in the same wild fantasy world that you do.

Here in reality, you're just another nutter in desperate need of mental help.

Perhaps it was wrong of me to suggest you hate the free market -- it's clear now that you're too delusional to even understand what that means.

Thank you for the compliment. I like living rent free in heads of random idiots on the internet, who think me the devil for not being able to play a stupid game of gotcha with me and win.

Don't forget to do the same in the next thread I post in.

Well, it's good in one way: maybe instead of needing two streaming services you only need one.

When I first signed up for Crunchyroll, it had all the anime. It was a really great deal. Then, Funimation decided to stop licensing their stuff to Crunchyroll and spin up their own competitor. Now I needed to start paying two different streaming services or else be unable to re-watch some of the shows I had watched. And these d

Every time a new streaming service starts up, people on Slashdot complain that it's a pain to have to pay so many different services.

There is an easy solution: Don't pay for a bunch of different services. No one is forcing you.

Yes, that means you won't be able to stream some things but it's the only way to fight this trend short of some uncomfortable legislation that forces media companies to license their work to competing streaming services.

Buy DVDs or Bluray discs if you just can't do without for some reason. They'll pay for themselves relatively quickly.

      • I agree that it's a bit of a pain when licenses are spread out among several different services. Yes, there was Crunchyroll, Funimation, and HIDIVE. It's the same way with gaming, with Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo (plus PC). If you don't want to pay for all of them, sometimes you might miss out on an exclusive.

But I'll take the improved competition over the "convenience" of having one company dominating the entire market, because believe me, that's only going to be "convenient" for a very short time, unt

      • by stikves ( 127823 )

The solution would be non-exclusive licenses. The services should compete on content quality, streaming quality, customer service and price.

Yes, *some* content could be exclusive, but that should be an exception, not the norm.

    • by narcc ( 412956 )

While I don't really care about cartoons, I do care a great deal about market consolidation. It's happening in every industry, which is absolutely a real problem.

If you believe in the free market, you know that competition is essential. It's what drives innovation and allows prices to be driven by ordinary market forces. The trouble, of course, is that an unregulated free market naturally creates monopolies.

  • Unfortunately, I do need to broaden my list of vendors.

Of course, this may mean that stuff licensed to CR will become available for purchase sooner. CR has been loath to let stuff in their "exclusive" list to hit retail as quickly as other companies.

Question is, what's "erotic"? A lot of manga and video is borderline; Guess it will be a guess as to what you can buy for now.
