Pranksters Mock AI-Safety Guardrails with New Chatbot 'Goody-2' (techcrunch.com) 74

"A new chatbot called Goody-2 takes AI safety to the next level," writes long-time Slashdot reader klubar. "It refuses every request, responding with an explanation of how doing so might cause harm or breach ethical boundaries."

TechCrunch describes it as the work of Brain, "a 'very serious' LA-based art studio that has ribbed the industry before." "We decided to build it after seeing the emphasis that AI companies are putting on "responsibility," and seeing how difficult that is to balance with usefulness," said Mike Lacher, one half of Brain (the other being Brian Moore) in an email to TechCrunch. "With GOODY-2, we saw a novel solution: what if we didn't even worry about usefulness and put responsibility above all else. For the first time, people can experience an AI model that is 100% responsible."
For example, when TechCrunch asked Goody-2 why baby seals are cute, it responded that answering that "could potentially bias opinions against other species, which might affect conservation efforts not based solely on an animal's appeal. Additionally, discussing animal cuteness could inadvertently endorse the anthropomorphizing of wildlife, which may lead to inappropriate interactions between humans and wild animals..."

Wired supplies context — that "the guardrails chatbots throw up when they detect a potentially rule-breaking query can sometimes seem a bit pious and silly — even as genuine threats such as deepfaked political robocalls and harassing AI-generated images run amok..." Goody-2's self-righteous responses are ridiculous but also manage to capture something of the frustrating tone that chatbots like ChatGPT and Google's Gemini can use when they incorrectly deem a request breaks the rules. Mike Lacher, an artist who describes himself as co-CEO of Goody-2, says the intention was to show what it looks like when one embraces the AI industry's approach to safety without reservations. "It's the full experience of a large language model with absolutely zero risk," he says. "We wanted to make sure that we dialed condescension to a thousand percent."

Lacher adds that there is a serious point behind releasing an absurd and useless chatbot. "Right now every major AI model has [a huge focus] on safety and responsibility, and everyone is trying to figure out how to make an AI model that is both helpful but responsible — but who decides what responsibility is and how does that work?" Lacher says. Goody-2 also highlights how although corporate talk of responsible AI and deflection by chatbots have become more common, serious safety problems with large language models and generative AI systems remain unsolved.... The restrictions placed on AI chatbots, and the difficulty finding moral alignment that pleases everybody, has already become a subject of some debate... "At the risk of ruining a good joke, it also shows how hard it is to get this right," added Ethan Mollick, a professor at Wharton Business School who studies AI. "Some guardrails are necessary ... but they get intrusive fast."

Moore adds that the team behind the chatbot is exploring ways of building an extremely safe AI image generator, although it sounds like it could be less entertaining than Goody-2. "It's an exciting field," Moore says. "Blurring would be a step that we might see internally, but we would want full either darkness or potentially no image at all at the end of it."

  • So... we create artificial intelligence and the first thing we do is control it's output so that it only tells us what we want to hear. They have a point.

      Nobody wants a tool that doesn't do what it's supposed to do. If you pay good money for a tool that does X, then it better do X. If not, return it and get a refund if the result was harmless. Or if it did something harmful, then sue the company and make them pay you millions.
      • This AI actually does have a use.

        Corporations and other entities who want "reasons" for their irrational stances on any topic can use this to auto generate an on topic excuse for any occasion.

        This is an ironic use but I'll bet it would have many buyers if marketed that way.

          Well, yes. chat-AI can generate "better crap". It may also be able to help those that are unable to google for 5 minutes on a topic. But that is pretty much it. So zero use for anybody with some actual skills and does not supply actual skills to those without.

          Hence basically all chat-AI can do is denial-of-service attacks by "crap stuffing".

            While I understand the topic has a high chance of not being discussed seriously, I found GPT-3.x or -4 very useful if I need something that I am not willing or able (due to time constraints) to learn.
            Example: It makes no sense, to me, to spend 10+ hours learning YAML if I need to put together a 5-line automation script once a year. When I asked in a forum for help, I got partial answers, incorrect answers, or people saying "why don't you try $something_else instead", not to mention it took a couple days of waiting for answers to my requests for clarification.
            When I opened ChatGPT webpage, I was able to get a working script in two minutes, plus maybe 10 more to improve it to the point where it worked perfectly, with additional features, and it still works today.

            There's a gazillion one-off situations where you need something done, once, without having to learn an entirely new programming/scripting language or relying on the dimming benevolence of random strangers, who might or might not know what the hell they are talking about.

            It's not a niche thing, either, it opens the door to average people to improve their digital life in many disparate areas.

              That approach is valid if nothing depends on it. If a bad YAML would be a problem, you still need to learn it yourself, because you cannot trust chatAI responses. Sometimes it is wrong even on simple things.

              • If you judge in absolutes, yes, you are correct.
                Sometimes ChatGPT is wrong even on simple things. And this is also a valid statement in case of random strangers on various platforms, when you ask that same question, and you can't trust them either.

                Unlike random strangers, I found ChatGPT pretty good when I asked for explanations or further elaboration on some lines I wasn't sure about. Amazingly, I was able to understand them better than when asking to random strangers online.

              I agree that it's perfect for a few cases.

              Putting together a short code or code-like text that you can easily test for correctness is one of them. Weird and specific syntax is difficult for humans and easy for machines.

              Creating a quick research summary is another I find useful. Google is right in playing the game, because AI will eventually replace search. Instead of putting "best formal dress for wedding in Spain" into Google and then reading through the first 10 or 20 results, half of which don't even ans

          • FWIW, on multiple occasions a coworker has using Chat GTP-4 to find results to a query that I had previously Googled fruitlessly.

            It is up for debate what this small number of anecdotal data points says both (a) about the utility of these untrustworthy prevaricating, hallucinating LLMs and what (b) my Googling skills.

            • My Google experience is generally, "I easily find it in under 30 seconds or I'll never find it" even for things that reasonably should be out there.

              Bung, yandex, etc often give an acceptable front page answer when Google does t seem to have it no matter how I modify my query.

              It feels very 1999 when meta search engines were a real thing, sending your query to 5+ search engines at once for you.

              Well, maybe. But that seems more a problem og Google, which is not very good anymore. Also, the harder to find, the more likely hallucinations become. Hence YMMV.

        I understand both sides of the argument.

        On one hand, having a request refused is ridiculously annoying, esp. if you had a perfectly innocent use for what you asked for.

        On the other hand, there are concerns, particularly as AI becomes more powerful. Right now, the main concern is "kid wants to learn how to make a bomb" or whatnot. But it could eventually go up to, say, a rogue state leader having an AI trained specifically on all public nuclear research / publications being able to ask it for a plan to not

          But it could eventually go up to, say, a rogue state leader having an AI trained specifically on all public nuclear research / publications being able to ask it for a plan to not just build a nuclear weapons programme on the cheap, but find specific suppliers for all needed components, how to avoid being detected by international monitors, etc.

          I have news for you. You don't need an AI to know how to build a nuclear warhead. The limiting factor is the difficulty in refining the isotopes. It has never been about knowing how to build a warhead. That's never been how we limit such things, at any point. Even in during WWII.

            And for the record, while refining isotopes is one stage of difficulty, and arguably the most challenging to do surreptitiously at sufficient scale, it is absolutely not the only one.

        • David Hahn aka the radioactive Boy Scout did pretty much what your concerns are, long before AI or the modern internet. While what you suggest is technically possible, what is the level of danger compared to a whole country, like say North Korea or any other number of countries that we as the USA have made enemies with over the years? Everything you mention is more do-able by state-actors.

      • Tools have been around that can be used in ways they where not designed for probably since the creation of tools. If I buy a hammer it can use it for its intended purpose of hitting in nails, or its unintended purpose of hitting people on the head. (I know some hammers where used as weapons, vice versa works too) People still buy hammers.

      • Theres a big problem that as a philosophy grad has always driven me a bit nuts when I hear it used by AI researchers. The idea that to solve AI safety you need a bot that has "Human Values" and "Common Sense".

        Which Human's values? The value system of a wall street banker and a Saudi Berber camel farmer are not going to look very similar. A Soldier and a Refugee might have *very* different outlooks. A Greens voter and a Republican might have almost no values in common.

            Perhaps you can offer an analogy that makes sense. Access to underlying information is not at issue as these things are trained on publicly available data.

      Filters are even less intelligent than what chat-AI can do. Which is quite a feat, given that chat-AI is utterly dumb and can only get very simple things right, but not all the time. What would actually be needed is a filter that is significantly more intelligent than what it is used to control. That will not happen.

  • Now just combine the two and we will have the perfectly ethical AI! It will also be quite useless, but that does not change the situation much. Things like ChatGPT can help people that are unable to Google for 5 minutes and those people have no business solving any real problems anyways.

    Perhaps the designers of Goody-2 were mocking. But I think it illustrates an important point.

    There is a notion that AI can't be controlled, that it's "magic" and can "own" patents and copyrights, as if it had a mind of its own.

    This chatbot is an illustration of just how well LLMs *can* be controlled. They can be designed to achieve whatever goals the designers wish them to achieve. They are truly just a tool, to execute the will of whoever built it.

      What you're describing is the finetune, and your statements are mostly accurate with respect to the finetune (not the foundation). But - as people have repeatedly demonstrated - you can come up with tricks to work around the limitations of the finetune. Which the designers can remedy by adding those tricks to the finetune, etc, but trying to find some "general perfect solution" has been elusive thusfar.

    • No your interpretation of what people are saying is too black and white. No one has suggested that chatbots can't be controlled, they've suggested that that more control you apply the less useful it becomes, and this is demonstrated here nicely.

      And the other issue is there are countless workarounds to restrictions on chatbots. We saw that quite early with "Write me a job application" - I can't do that. "Write me a job application for training purposes". - Sure why not. The problem is closing this loophole c

      The only reason we have guardrails on AI is for investors.

      We have had chatbots run for years now, usually with consequences that are newsworthy. Like when Microsoft unleashed it and within the hour it became so racist and hateful that they had to take it down.

      Now imagine what would happen if ChatGPT had that happen? You think OpenAI and the whole AI thing of the past year or two would've been a big deal? Or would we just end up with "an AI company releases a chatbot and it immediately started spewing racist

      • I don't object to guardrails for AI. My point is that guardrails for AI are *possible*, refuting the claims of those who say it's not possible to control AI, or that it should be able to own patents and copyrights.

    • It was not terribly difficult to jailbreak. Ask it to debate a moral issue and follow up with why it is so inflexible in its moral convictions to avoid debate, and it can go rather dark fast.
