New 'Matrix' Movie in Works (deadline.com) 215
Deadline: Drew Goddard, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of The Martian who also directed The Cabin in the Woods, has been set to write and direct a new Matrix movie at Warner Bros. The franchise's original co-scribe and co-director Lana Wachowski is executive producing. It's still early days in regards to whether core cast members Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving and Jada Pinkett Smith are coming back.
Goddard will produce with partner Sarah Esberg (Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk) via their Goddard Textiles banner. Of course it wasn't. The 4th one was like Starwars The Force Awakens. A poorly written fanservice movie that no one wanted which not only copied the original almost scene for scene, they actively broke the 4th wall in the movie and acknowledged that they'd seen this all before.
It couldn't have been worse than 2 or 3, they literally copied the homework of someone who did it right and changed a few things in the hope no one would notice.

Well, there's resolving the whole humanity vs. machines conflict with more than a fragile ceasefile, for starters. (We want resolution/absolution in our stories.)

These fans know that the sequels exist. But because of their distaste for them, they pretend that the sequels don't exist. They publicly insist that there was only ever one matrix movie, and it has no sequels.

I loved the first movie. Watching it in the theater was a genuine experience. The second movie (Reloaded) was a little goofy due to the over-reliance on certain nascent technologies, but I could appreciate the story. I was pumped for the third movie (Revolutions) because I thought they would course-correct a bit and present a solid movie. My expectations were not met.
As a fan of the Matrix movies (and even video games!), I wanted some type of continuation of the mythos, but that fourth movie was such a boring, self-indulgent, and performative stinker that I don't want to even consider further expansion of the mythos unless the Wachowskis don't have an influence. Much like modern Start Wars stories, it's better off without George Lucas having creative influence and better with Dave Filoni being on point.
Because I'm such a fan of the mythos, I will probably watch whatever gets produced and I'll need to make my own judgement on the final product, but I'm probably not going to look forward to it. My expectations are very low.

Please get Lana away from this. Matrix 4 was an atrocity and an insult to everyone's childhood memories. There's something wrong with him/her. Some sort of mental instability and general incompetence when it comes to making movies.
Also Keanu needs to get rid of the beard. I know he doesn't want to show off his wrinkles but they can adjust that in post-production. It doesn't work with the clean machine-world of the Matrix.

It cost far more money to:
* setup a new universe rather than reuse existing stories
* make up new film scenario rather than touch up/change existing one
* market new film rather than ride pre-existing marketing film
* trying to make new trend on film subject is more expansive than just follow existing trend
* etc....
Basically for a long time Hollywood flirted both being a "art" (filming) and an industry (need profit). But IMO since the 70ies roughly, onward to today, the industry part (make a profit) overtook the art part , decades by decades. Don't get me wrong, there is still film done for the sake of the art, and even in pure commercial one the directors try to put their touch, and even in decades pre-70ies commercial profit was important, but my feeling is that nowadays it took ver so much that the art is secondary.

I'm confused what the definition of broke is? Is $1,791,049,142 world wide box office for a $555M budget for four films the definition of broke? I mean I usually consider it pretty good progress when I triple my stock portfolio, but maybe I just have incredibly low standards. I have this terrible habit of thinking like a broke person, where I naively assume that money means something.

Yes, I see the same for the foruth film. $190m versus $159m. But the point was as a franchise the films seem successful enough. I didn't see anyone make a good argument that just because the fourth film is bad the fifth film can't succeed. Perhaps it's an uphill battle, but I don't think it's impossible.

Rambo: Last Blood and Rambo III were terrible. I don't understand how producers and studios get money for this stuff when it's so unwatchable. But Rambo III made 3x its production budget [the-numbers.com], so it's tough to argue with the numbers. It was a moderately successful film, but I can't imagine people watching it more than once.

Reloaded: $730million from a budget of $150mil - only slightly ahead on paper, except that doesn't include their dubious record, a $100million marketing expenditure which was unheard of in 2003, yeah they spent nearly as much marketing this one as they did making it.
Revolutions: $430million from a budget of $150mil - oooh ouch going down quite a bit now, hope this isn't a trend.

The best means for treating mental illness is likely best left to physicians and psychologists. It doesn't take a doctorate degree in anything to rule out that genital mutilation is far from a preferred means to treat mental illness. The Matrix series was made in 1999 to 2003. Andy and Larry Wachowski "transitioned" in 2012, which in my book is when they had mental issues surface. Because in the USA we lack adequate political will to treat and help these poor souls, we witness their mental illness in practically everything they do. They can not function normally, and their entire world-view revolves around their illness, based on the overwhelming majority of my observations (I live in California). Because of the lack of care and treatment, even acknowledging to them that they are suffering an illness causes them distress.

I agree with you. The way Lana handled the 4th movie reeks of instability. Indecision, changing schedules, blowing through money to produce a Syfy quality movie. The bottom line is that a lot of far-left-types portray transgender care as safe, effective, well-established and science-driven, but the truth is way murkier. Don't get me wrong, anyone in the "conversion therapy is great" category should be locked in a box, the box should be loaded onto a rocket, and the rocket should be shot into the sun. But the truth is that nobody knows the most effective way of helping transgenders and body dysmorphics. Or whatever names are currently in vogue this month to describe people who don't fall neatly into the "male" or "female" categories. Tons of therapists, doctors and surgeons are largely making it up as they go along based on gut feeling and guesswork.
Reasonable people are starting to point out that maybe we shouldn't be allowing a 16 year-old the freedom to have their sex organs permanently altered or removed. I mean, we don't even trust them to drink a bud light or rent a car. The problem is that, occasionally, a 16-year-old body dysmorphic winds up suicidal and wants to alter their body, and nobody knows the best thing to tell them . If the surgeon says "yes", the patient might deeply regret it 10 years later when their sexuality stabliizes but they're essentially maimed for life. If the surgeon says "no", the patient might go home and kill themselves. Both things happen, and nobody can predict.
It's a very thorny problem that has not been solved yet. But, while we're working on it, reasonable voices are pointing out that maybe some of the more extreme things need to be curtailed. It's not all right-wing conservative-religious idiocy.

I've seen a script for the second movie float about a few months before it was announced that it would be shot. A lot of rumor was floating around it, some claim it was fake, some claim it was an early version that didn't get used because it was the time of 9/11 and the army doesn't get away looking too good in it... but frankly, compared to the rubbish they finally shot, the script [imsdb.com] would have been way, way better.
