Apple In Talks To Bring Ads To Apple TV+ (macrumors.com) 32

Following in the footsteps of competitors Netflix and Disney+, Apple is reportedly working on bringing advertisements to Apple TV+ through an ad-supported tier. MacRumors reports: Apple has apparently been in discussions with the UK's Broadcaster's Audience Research Board (BARB) to explore the necessary data collection techniques for monitoring advertising results. Currently, BARB provides viewing statistics for major UK networks including the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Sky, as well as Apple TV+ programming.

While BARB already monitors viewing time for Apple TV+ content, additional techniques are required to track advertising metrics accurately. This data is vital for advertisers to assess the reach and impact of their campaigns on the platform. In addition to the UK, Apple has also reportedly held similar discussions with ratings organizations in the United States. Apple has already included limited advertising in its live sports events, such as last year's Major League Soccer coverage, where ads were incorporated even for Season Pass holders. It is also notable that in March Apple hired Joseph Cady, a former advertising executive from NBCUniversal, to bolster its video advertising team.

    FUCK YOU TOO

    • Agree. I am so god damned motherfucking TIRED of seeing ads every god damned place I look and go.

If it were possible to snap my fingers and kill every single person on Earth who is associated in any way with advertising, I would do it.

      • Iâ(TM)m an old hippie pacifistâ¦but Iâ(TM)d be snapping my fingers right along with you.

Fuck these guys. Iâ(TM)m so done with them.

May they have explosive and unpredictable diarrhea the rest of their lives.

  • It is insane that Apple and many other companies trying to rebuild cable, only over the Internet. It must have been very lucrative, but it took decades to boil the frog for people to accept 10min+ advertising breaks. I hope this is not our future.
    • It will be our future as long as people have to have their entertainment. I'm done, I refuse to pay for ads. But all this is enshitification, which basically means that companies lure people in with low cost services, then start charging more when there are no more alternatives. Then they start introducing services on top of the services that degrade the original service and start making money hand over fist on both ends. The only way we'll get around it is with regulation, which we'll never get because of
      • Torrents are still a thing. Still too hard to use for most consumers. But those who really can't stand ads still have the option of unsubscribing from ad-supported streaming services.
For those who own their roof, an OTA coupled with digital tunner / DVR and Plex works pretty well. Ads are broadcast, but removed. I can live with that. For streaming, that's not an option. Hence torrent.

    • Theyâ(TM)re not (yet) though. The thing about cable was that I *had* to buy 24 months of 700 channels I gave no shits about. There was no way to buy only Disney, or only HBO, or only â¦

While Iâ(TM)m no fan of the addition of advertising, the channel bundling was the real problem with cable.

      • You mean like what Apple TV+ does and is expanding on? (Which is what this article is about) Apple TV+ already has Apple Originals and now Friday Night Baseball bundled in. That isn't free for them so guess who's paying for it, regardless if they like baseball or not. Like ads, it's slowly happening again.

Yup. Same with Amazon. And Netflix is moving into live sports, too. The entire streaming industry has become a dumpster fire, and the only winning move is not to play.

Probably went something like this: "You know, we really need to do something about our service. It's not as shitty as the other streaming platforms. How can we make it shittier?" (hand goes up) "I know! Ads!" (heads nod) "Yeah that's a great idea! That'll make it REALLY shitty!"

Apple, I thought you were better than this

      Why?

Apple have repeatedly show they are in no way, better than this.

Not to go too hard on the 'member berries, but do you remember when it was just Netflix? It was great! With the enshitification of streaming services, I have gone back to sailing the seven seas. It is far from ideal, but I refuse to pay for ten different streaming services. I do pay for one - Criterion. Besides having the best movies, it also has a feature where something is always streaming. You don't know what you will get, but I have been introduced to numerous great films this way.
    • My recollection of the early days of Netflix's streaming service was that it was fine if you wanted to browse through their catalog and watch something they had. If you had something specific in mind, say a popular 1980s comedy, chances were good it would just tell you to subscribe to their DVD rental service.

Personally, I hate all the recommendations and curated crap that streaming services do. If I want to sit down and re-watch Stargate SG1, that's what I damn well am going to watch, regardless of how m

    • I 'member when Criterion was included with Hulu at no additional charges.
  • I've got a great idea for an innovative and new concept. Provide all content absolutely free. Not only that, you don't need an Internet connection to use it, everything is broadcast using radio waves. Push content on a schedule that everyone knows. No need to search and search for what you want. Incredible savings! Everything is supported by just a few ads tucked in here and there.

    Oh, wait.

  • If I pay anything for your service, I will not tolerate ads of any kind. Period. Ever. No exceptions. And it's not about piracy... it's about giving a fuck to even download their bullshit for free. I find myself not even bothering to download 95% of their shit even if it's free. I bet I'm not alone.

  • Cable was originally supposed to be ad free. Then they realized there was more money to be had

Any streaming provider that doesn't have a no-ads tier will never get any of my money. Although Apple would never get any of my money anyway because I hate Apple for various reasons.

  • If the service with ads, then sure. ;)

  • The only reason I pay now is to avoid ads. If I have to pay for ads I will cancel.

The worst thing about Apple TV+ is that it's already mostly ads. You browse for something to watch, find something, click on it, then it tells you that's not part of your subscription. Sorry, you need to pay extra to watch that.

  • If you spend X$$/year with Apple, this show is on us! Give us something at least . . .
