Disney Officially Launches Password-Sharing Crackdown With Paid Sharing Program (hollywoodreporter.com) 22

Disney has officially launched its password and account-sharing crackdown, rolling out what it is calling its "paid sharing program" to users in the U.S. and in many regions around the world this week. The rollout follows the company sharing plans to crackdown on unauthorized usage on its streaming service earlier this year. From a report: The paid sharing program has a couple of options for users, per a blog post published Wednesday: People sharing an account with someone outside their household can add that person as an "Extra Member" for $6.99 per month for Disney+ Basic, or $9.99 for Disney+ Premium, both discounts to the normal retail price. Only one Extra Member will be allowed per account, and it is not available as part of the Disney Bundle. In addition, users sharing an account can also subscribe to Disney+ themselves, and can transfer an eligible profile to the new account to keep their watch history and settings. The password-cracking effort has helped Netflix boost its subscribers count in recent quarters.

I just want to reminisce about how great streaming services were a few years back.

I'd get mad but it turns out that I had already cancelled Disney plus after the last price hike.

I tried to watch Amazon prime recently and there were ads in it, and they wanted more money to make the ads go away, lol.

The thing that got me mad about Amazon Prime Video is that I know that I am no longer going to use it and I can't cancel it without cancelling Amazon prime delivery, so I passionately hate it, I'd prefer if Amazon Prime delivery would cost less rather than a bundled in shit streaming service I can't use without getting mad at it.

I remember one family member having a Netflix account another one having Disney plus so the whole cost of streaming services was shared across the family, now there's alternative methods we have to use to obtain content, just like the good old days, or you would just subscribe to one at a time per month and binge the content on that, but I have noted that a few different streaming services have already tried to crack down on that so it's just gonna get worse, binge (the AU version of HBO) for example has some bullshit where only certain episodes are only available for a certain amount of time, so if you missed last week's, too bad lol.

It's just ganna get worse, they're not worth it anymore.

So just get a raspberry Pi and setup a VPN, now your "viewing" IP is from the same household.

      • Better yet, just set up a plex server or something similar and just pirate the content. *Person Shrugging Emoji*

Instructions unclear, couldn't figure out how to VPN into a network behind CG-NAT. So many of these "just do" make assumptions that are not valid for everyone. I used to pay for a business plan to get a proper honest to god IP address, only to now be faced with a policy that business accounts are only for registered businesses and that is a significant roadblock for someone not actually running a business.

Dear Mr. Ghost of Christmas Past,

Ghost of Christmas Future also wants to point out...

Current Disney+ Basic (With Ads): $7.99
Disney+ Basic (With Ads) extra account: $6.99
      After 2024-10-17, Disney+ Basic (With Ads): $9.99

Current Disney+ Premium (No Ads): $13.99
Disney+ Premium (No Ads) extra account: $9.99
      After 2024-10-17, Disney+ Premium (No Ads): $15.99

I think there's a reason they're not announcing these simultaneously (or maybe they are and I missed it). Currently, if I had two+ households using Disney+, I'

  • We still password share on Netflix w/o any warnings. Disney + had it for free when son bought a phone and got it for free for a year. After a month or 2, nobody was watching anymore. Never paid for it. I stream for free off internet sites....for over 12 years now.

Via PC/tablet/laptop, or via media device (Roku, Chromecast, FireTV, AppleTV)?

AFAIK, they don't crack down (much) on PC/Tablet/Laptop use because those can travel around with you and that's the expected usage. Or that's what they say, at least. Probably a combo of technical issues and expected usage. Imagine the feedback if your tablet wouldn't stream anything once you left your home/WiFi coverage.

      • Wife and me use iMac . iPad, grown kids use PC laptops. Do nothing to avoid it.

Welp, that's why you're not seeing the impact of the account sharing crackdown! If I understand correctly, as long as those devices are used on your home network once in a while (I forget the exact frequency), then they'll keep being active.

  • good thing disney's priorities is making their service more defective by design, and harder to use for their paying customers and not fixing their buggy-AF UI or producing more content

it makes it easier to compete with them and an easier sell for a cartoon producing entity to replace them

You have more than enough money, you still have more than enough demand for your products, you have your forever+ 70 years copyright. Loosen the fuck up already. • All Disney had to do was sell an extra family member plan for $1/person.

Greed and Stupidity is killing Disney.

They don't have as much money as you think. Their stock is roughly 1/2 what it was before covid. Indiana Jones 5 lost over $100 million. So did Marvels. Disney Plus has hemorrhaged money since the launch. The biggest hit on their streaming service is Bluey and they have to license that!
