Apple TV+ Is 'Worst Marketer In the Universe,' Says Producer (9to5mac.com) 21

TV producer Alex Berger criticized Apple TV+ as "the worst marketer in the universe" for failing to promote his French-language show La Maison, despite its success in Europe. Berger said he initially partnered with Apple out of hope, but ultimately felt they undermined their own content by not supporting it properly. 9to5Mac reports: Rafa Sales Ross at Variety recently interviewed TV producer Alex Berger, who made La Maison for Apple TV+. That partnership is apparently not one he intends to repeat: "Marketing makes a show," he emphasized. "Apple, for example, is probably the worst marketer in the universe -- the best for iPhones, the worst for television. They don't do marketing, and it was an issue for us with 'La Maison.' We did a great show that had an amazing success in France and other places in Europe, but they never promoted it. It drove me crazy."

Asked why, while believing Apple TV+ to lack in marketing efforts, did he decide to take "La Maison" to the streamer, Berger said simply: "Hope. We had hope." "Apple TV+ had never done a show in France and never really done a show in Europe," adds the producer. "'Slow Horses' started [things] in the U.K., but it was with the U.S.. I was hoping I would change them. We got very frustrated and just thought at one point that they were shooting themselves in the foot, and why?
"La Maison faced the additional challenge of being a French-language series, at the time one of the only non-English shows on the streamer," notes 9to5Mac's Ryan Christoffel. "So it had an uphill battle already, making Apple's marketing struggles even more of a problem."

  • This sounds like the spouse that marries thier partner in the hope of changing them, then gets upset when their spouse never changes. Quite honestly Apple TV is a niche player in streaming, if you have a product that can stand on its own then Apple isn’t the right fit. A French language program automatically has a limited audience, it is going to have little interest from the mainly English speaking US audience, Apple are only going to spend money on promoting things to their largest audience, and the
    • I think its more because Apple has no experience with any kind of streaming service. They really got late in the game and the first thing they pick up for the US is a French TV show using subtitles? It was doomed from the start. If they got in BEFORE all these services gated their content they might of had a chance.

Hell look at all their recent stuff. Their marketing team doesn't have to work hard to promote the iPhone. They don't even bother trying to break in the Windows market at all even with al

I've never heard of this show but it has an English dub like everything else and what do you mean first, it's not the first show Apple picked up?! Dude are you tarded?

    • Or most who subscribe to Apple TV have different interests. I wanted to watch Foundations and a few other Apple shows but not enough to subscribe for other stuff do not care to view. Go To YouTube more diverse has different viewing plans from advertisers to subscriptions

Isn't that backwards? If it can stand on its own, then you could have it on AppleTV, because people would come to see it. If it needs marketing other than word of mouth, then you can't sell it on Apple TV, because Apple won't sell it for you; this is not the first time I've heard it said they don't do promotion, so it's at least a known complaint.

    • What the hell are you talking about, Squid Games is Korean and massively popular. You're talking as if dubbing doesn't exist. _Many_ successful shows on Netflix are foreign for example.

  • Funny, it was never the marketing that made me think a show was good.
Unless he meant to say something else at the end of that sentence, like "annoying".

    • It is, however, the marketing that lets you know a show exists, so you can watch it. With the amount of original content available across the streaming networks, there is a near-100% chance that there are shows out there that you would love that you have no idea exist.

Does your show use sets?...special effects?...costumes?...writers? Those cost money and shows without an audience get canceled. I can name dozens of AMAZING shows no one has heard of that were GREAT, but got canceled because the network did a shit job of promoting it. One famous example was Family Guy...found a massive audience on reruns and was renewed...same with Arrested Development, but there were shows on FX & HBO that I loved a lot more, but never found their audience...and thus had an early de

  • There have been very few shows that have have watched since they started. haven't watched any movies from them. Either I hit a window where I have gotten free 3 month access or I watch their show from another source. It's NOT worth it as a full time subscription !

Apple advertises it as anti advertising/anti Google/pro-privacy, so how can it do advertising for apple tv effectively.

I've had iOS devices continuously since I bought an iPhone 3gs. This includes 2 Apple TVs currently in use. In that time I've been offered a series of free or heavily discounted introductory rates for Apple TV+. I've never once activated any of them.

This isn't because I have an aversion to streaming. At various times I've been subscribed to Disney+, Netflix, Crunchyroll, Funimation, Paramount+, YouTube Premium, Spotify... And clearly I'm not Apple averse. I just don't know what's on Apple TV+, and nothing leads me to look it up.

Now that HAS to be terrible marketing.

  • Apple has shown it's chops as being a terrific production company, the shows they produce tend to be high quality and critically and audience acclaimed and they seem to have more of that old-school HBO mindset of find talented people and let them do their thing.

That does not mean you can or should also be the only distribution source in a crowded field, especially when people want their ever-cost-increasing subscriptions to have a large library for their money.

Apple would probably be better off selling thei

  • It is legally mandated to carry French language programming in France. It is a compliance requirement.

Why would they waste promotional dollars on it? They met the legal requirement.

If bankers can count, how come they have eight windows and only four tellers?
