'Matrix 4' Officially a Go With Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss (variety.com) 208
Lana Wachowski is set to write and direct a fourth film set in the world of "The Matrix," with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively. Variety reports: Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute the film. In addition to Wachowski, the script was also written by Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. Wachowski is also producing with Grant Hill. Sources say the film is eyed to begin production at the top of 2020. Warner Bros. has been trying for the last of couple years to find a way to get back into "The Matrix" universe, but a hold-up over producing rights slowed the project down. Over the past couple of months, the studio saw an opportunity to ramp up development, with Reeves boasting a strong summer that included box office hits "John Wick 3"; and "Toy Story 4" and a script from Wachowski that drummed up excitement. Plot details are currently unknown, as is how the role of Morpheus will be handled, originally played by Laurence Fishburne. Some sources say the role may be recast for a younger take. Because all that most life can pass on to the next generation is genetics. Humans can pass knowledge to the next generation which I suspect is becoming more valuable than genetic material, but I'm not sure this ability has been around long enough for evolution to properly account for it.

At the end of 3, Neo turns magical and gets powers in the outside world to integrate with the Machines. He's The One, right?
Nope. The outside world was just another layer of simulation. Nobody has magic in the real world. It's cold and materialistic.
The outside world was constructed by the machines as a means of control for those who could not accept the Matrix world living. It was a Matrix outside of the Matrix. The classic motif of waking up from a dream and then waking up again.
But, why, why would this happen to Neo, our Hero? Because he made the mistake of accepting Morpheus's choice - red pill or blue pill. He chose red. He chose to leave the inner matrix. Morpheus didn't know any better either.
Why was that a mistake? Because he let his future be determined by two choices that somebody else made for him. He didn't invent his own future, he chose from among the predefined choices. At that point, he was unable to escape from the Matrix.

But the people of Zion don't want to take them up necessarily. The world is a mess, the surface barely habitable. There just aren't the resources for millions, maybe billions of people to live in the real world. So they have to build a new Matrix, and have to decide if they are going to tell everyone in it that it's all fake but better than the real world, and try to deal with the consequences of that. If it's not real people will demand it be modified into a paradise for them, but we know that didn't work in the past.
Neo is now the big bad, forcing everyone to live in that 90s era world while the real one is slowly rebuilt. He's been there, he's struggled with the concept of free will and choice, and he thinks this is the way it has to be.
