'Matrix 4' Officially a Go With Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss (variety.com) 208

Lana Wachowski is set to write and direct a fourth film set in the world of "The Matrix," with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively. Variety reports: Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute the film. In addition to Wachowski, the script was also written by Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. Wachowski is also producing with Grant Hill. Sources say the film is eyed to begin production at the top of 2020. Warner Bros. has been trying for the last of couple years to find a way to get back into "The Matrix" universe, but a hold-up over producing rights slowed the project down. Over the past couple of months, the studio saw an opportunity to ramp up development, with Reeves boasting a strong summer that included box office hits "John Wick 3"; and "Toy Story 4" and a script from Wachowski that drummed up excitement. Plot details are currently unknown, as is how the role of Morpheus will be handled, originally played by Laurence Fishburne. Some sources say the role may be recast for a younger take. This seems like an unfortunate effect of the current "safe" cinema trend. I can't imagine anyone asking for a continuation of the Matrix story, it concluded decisively with Matrix 3. The last movie already opened up certain arcs (Keanu's superpowers in the real world) that should never have been considered, and are best left buried.

I fear this will only bring tar on the original series.

You know, you more or less could do that. It would be in effect an 'alternate timeline', because as you'll recall the 'cumulative error' in the equation that represents The Matrix itself meant it needed resetting from time to time, so it's entirely plausible that there would be multiple instances of Mister Anderson/Neo and at least analogues of all the other main characters (including Agent Smith). The major constants in this would be The Oracle and The Architect.
      • Considering both Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne Moss' characters were both dead by the end of the third movie they're going to have to. Or occur sometime prior to 3.

The second movie wasn't bad as an action movie, it just didn't have as good of a story as the first movie. The bullet time effect wasn't as big a deal either. Plus the concept of the first movie was pretty cerebral for a Hollywood movie at the time. Which made it shocking to the typical movie goer. From the advertising I figured it was going to b

And the CGI was not up to the goofiness of the Neo Smith fight.

That fight felt like a straight-out copy of the Goku/Buu fight from Dragon Ball Z. By that point, DBZ had been getting drawn-out and overly dramatic for years. It looked even more ridiculous seeing it done with "serious" CGI in Revolutions.

        • The fact that he could control the machines meant he was still in the Matrix. Just another level of the simulation. That's your story, right there.

          • When I first saw Reloaded in the theater I thought the next movie would reveal that what they thought was the real world was just another simulation, or a firewall to the real world. Which would have made the Matrix a simulation within a simulation. That would have also explained how Smith could possess someone in the "real" world. Personally, I'd like to see a sequel to The Matrix that ignored 2 and 3.

2 and 3 were painful, granted. But the story arc was important.

*** SPOILERS FOR 15 YEAR OLD MOVIE ***

At the end of 3, Neo turns magical and gets powers in the outside world to integrate with the Machines. He's The One, right?

Nope. The outside world was just another layer of simulation. Nobody has magic in the real world. It's cold and materialistic.

The outside world was constructed by the machines as a means of control for those who could not accept the Matrix world living. It was a Matrix outside of the Matrix. The classic motif of waking up from a dream and then waking up again.

But, why, why would this happen to Neo, our Hero? Because he made the mistake of accepting Morpheus's choice - red pill or blue pill. He chose red. He chose to leave the inner matrix. Morpheus didn't know any better either.

Why was that a mistake? Because he let his future be determined by two choices that somebody else made for him. He didn't invent his own future, he chose from among the predefined choices. At that point, he was unable to escape from the Matrix.

Make your future what you want it to be - don't go down a path that somebody else has laid out for you.

Oh, and don't forget to vote - red or blue, it doesn't matter, just choose one.

I'd go in a different direction.

After Matrix 3 it's not clear what happened to all the people still in the pods. Were they killed when Agent Smith replaced them? No, they are still there, asleep and waiting for the Matrix to reboot.

But the people of Zion don't want to take them up necessarily. The world is a mess, the surface barely habitable. There just aren't the resources for millions, maybe billions of people to live in the real world. So they have to build a new Matrix, and have to decide if they are going to tell everyone in it that it's all fake but better than the real world, and try to deal with the consequences of that. If it's not real people will demand it be modified into a paradise for them, but we know that didn't work in the past.

Neo is now the big bad, forcing everyone to live in that 90s era world while the real one is slowly rebuilt. He's been there, he's struggled with the concept of free will and choice, and he thinks this is the way it has to be. Trinity is the leader of the resistance, after Neo recreated her within the Matrix. That means she has no physical body, she is like the Agents, a computer program.

Haven't quite figured out the twist ending yet.

        Tha Matrix Sequels Rebooted.

    • They both get on a bus which is rigged to detonate the matrix if they slow down and they must find a way to work together. Hilarity Ensues.

    • There is the fan theory that the real world is actually just a second layer of the Matrix for people who reject the primary layer, so Neo's powers working there would make sense if they want to pull a twist and say that no one ever really left the Matrix in the first place. That part could be salvaged.

Either that or they go with the 'Neo has wifi' theory, which IIRC was the official explanation.
    • This seems like an unfortunate effect of the current "safe" cinema trend. I can't imagine anyone asking for a continuation of the Matrix story, it concluded decisively with Matrix 3. If you can't imagine an interesting continuation or side-story set in the Matrix universe, you have an underdeveloped imagination. Regardless of if you liked the second or third movies, it's a rich storytelling setting.

    • The end of the first movie, where Neo got Superman-level powers, trivialized most of the potential for in-Matrix drama in the sequels.

The Animatrix was a good successor to the first movie, though not a sequel, and the third movie did well by moving out of the Matrix and looking at everything else. Albeit, the third movie was pretty different and not everyone liked it for that reason... and probably for other reasons... the climax was a little odd. The second movie was the black sheep.
